I have been nothing but happy with my Toyotas. I ran my Tundra up to 200K without 1 single problem, and my 08 Tacoma is on schedule to be the same.

I am thinking of jumping ship and getting a VW Jetta TDI wagon. I drive hundreds of highway miles some days and need to carry a lot of sales samples, but not so many that I need to the truck. I really, really wish Toyota would offer the diesel option in the Tacoma, but they are not going to, and I think this is where we part ways until they do. The TDI is getting 40 MPG HWY, and since I'm driving like 30,000 miles a year I should be keeping a lot more money in my pocket.

Does anybody want to try and talk me out of this?

You got to do what will save you more money in the long run, if I drove that many miles a year I would be getting the VW however I am a truck guy I have no need or want for a car plus a car wouldn't be able to make it up my driveway in the winter lol, do whats best for you Bro.

I went from the VW to a Taco and I drive over 30,000 miles a year. IDK, guess I just love being in a truck more.

Yea! Our family's 2003 tdi jetta wagon has been nothing but a nightmare. The turbo has gone twice, the glow plugs have been replaced a few times, not to mention the crazy electrical system. It's impossible to realign the rear end, and the passenger side seat warmer literally burst into flames while I was sitting in it.

Merging on to highways is really scary too... Thing just doesn't get up and go... Maybe the new models are more reliable, but ours has been a huge problem, and a lot of money has gone into fixing it. More trouble than it's worth in my opinion. It currently won't run due to another glow plug issue. Maybe we got a dud. Ground clearance is a huge issue, as soon as it goes off pavement onto a dirt driveway or a job site it gets interesting.

The sad part is we traded a toyota in for the jetta. Worst call ever.

Do some homework before you pull the trigger (check out VW vortex).

The common rail diesel in the new VW's have been having fuel pump problems - they shred themselves and send shrapnel throughout the fuel system. Repair costs are up to $8k when it happens.

They also have electrical and DSG issues (if you go that way). Hopefully they have got the fuel pump issues resolved, but it was enough to scare me away a couple years ago when I was looking at them.

We own a 2009 Tacoma and a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. By far, the TDI is a driver's machine. Torque is ridiculous although it tops out quick. Been getting high 30's and low 40's with mixed driving. If I really get on it, mpg hangs around mid 30's.

I would buy one, knowing that I was going to get rid of it when the warranty is up. The HPFP is either a ticking time bomb or like shooting fish in a barrel. If there weren't issues with the HPFP, I would be driving a TDI Touareg too.

Keep your truck and get a TDI:D I plan on getting one as a work vehicle eventually. I drive a lot of miles and need a fuel saver.

    If you are mechanically inclined:

My wife and I will probably rack up miles on the VW, enjoy the ridiculously great driving experience, then dump it when the warranty is up. And that commercial doesn't lie, those doors feel solid.

Pros: great gas mileage, great driving, massive panoramic sunroof, awesome dual clutch transmission.

Cons: expensive oil changes, expensive transmission service, unreliable dealership service, always wondering when the HPFP is going to take a dump, being OCD about getting diesel from the same place as often as possible, documenting all diesel fuel-ups, questionable build quality (our vehicle had 'leather' up front and cloth in the back when we bought it, VW was as confused as us).

    this and that...
if mileage and fuel economy is a concern, why not just get a prius wagon? cant complain with 50+ mpg.

First post, but weird I am reading about this. I sold my 2001 Tundra a year and a half ago and bought a VW GTI. I know it's not a Jetta, but they are somewhat similar.

Well, long story short, yesterday I went to Toyota and traded un the GTI AND put down a deposit for a Tacoma (did not have my preference in stock). My situation might be different than yours, but I could not justify owning the VW due to the amount of problems I had been reading and the high repair costs after warranty was out of date. In my opinion, VW has really cheapened their products, especially the interior with the Jetta as its first. The GTI's had an excellent interior, but VW now seems to be trying to make interchangeable parts between models. The new GTI's coming out in 2014 are able to be swapped with the Jetta.

Above all, I am more of a truck guy. You are definitely going to be saving more when it comes to the fuel mileage, but I would definitely be more comfortable after my warranty is up in a Toyota than a VW. just my two cents.

I dunno about the Jetta, but my buddy just bought a Golf TDI hatchback a few months ago and he loves it. Seems like a pretty cool ride!

Think they will add the Amarok TDI to the US market? They look great and would be a serious consideration to anyone buying a Taco.

Look into the passat TDI. Unless I'm mistaken, it has a different fuel system than the golf and jetta which are prone to HPFP failures

VW makes a crap car. The interiors never hold up and they have a lot of engine problems. I would suggest a Civic or a Corolla if your looking for something better built, more reliable and also better on gas.
