No. That's a great vehicle for you and I'd probably do similar. No way I'd drive that truck that many miles per year. Good luck whichever way you go!

My daughter had a Jetta, O2 sensor~$300. Brother in law new Beetle, windows would go down by themselves after the car was parked, three times to the shop and they still went down. Daughters Jetta started doing the same, both dropped the VW's for Toyota.

Diesel is sixty to seventy cents over gas, diesel pump areas are always dirty from spillage that doesnt evaporate and getts on your shoes to be tracked into the vehicle or other places, diesel fuel has a magical way of getting on your hands,(brother in law carried disposable rubber gloves), burp back from automatic nozzles needs to be cleaned up with soapy water or it attracts dirt. Your wife will probably fill it up once and never let you forget that she wont do it again. Just a few things to be aware of. Not anti diesel they have there place.

I had a 2000 Passat that had multiple mechanical problems as well as interior being a POS.

Friend had a 2007 Jetta that had many problems and sh#t interior as well. He now has a Tacoma and loves it.

Another girl I know basically had a a lemon of a Jetta. After taking it in for major engine problems multiple times, she got her money back. (It helped that her dad knew the GM at the dealership)

I have sworn off VW. I currently have a BMW and am tired of its maintenance problems and price to fix. German cars drive awesome, but overall quality/longevity is questionable. Like others have said, buy a VW, but get rid of it before the warranty runs out.

    -Rant off

I'd go with the TDI. 50 mpg is not at all uncommon in those things and the Golf is making 170 horse right off the lot and even more torque which is plenty of pep for a light car. The current VW's have come a long way from the early 2000's. Interior quality/build quality seems to be pretty good any more. I'd hit up the aforementioned WVvortex or golfmk6.com and direct reliability questions there. I was in the same boat and had to trade the truck for a more fuel efficient ride. Opted for aused '12 GTI. I like it a lot. It's defiantly a practical little car that's a blast to drive. Miss the hell out of my truck but I've got a 70 mile round trip commute and filling up every 4 days at $60+ a pop wasn't doable any more.

The newer VW TDI's are great, if you're buying new and get the warranty. Otherwise, I'd hang tight. There's a bunch of new cars coming out (and already out) that will deliver Golf TDI-beating economy. Check out the new Mazda 6 with the 2.2 diesel coming later this year - 175hp and 310lb-feet of torque, in a setup that'll run circles around a Jetta TDI and starts at a lower price point.

Wowee, that has got to be one of Mazda's best looking sedan ever! I would give it a year of two before buying so that Mazda sorts out any problems that will arise.

Kept my Tacoma when I started commuting 200miles a day round-trip. Picked up an 04 TDI Jetta at the time and have put about 80k on it in a little over 2 years. I do all the maintenance on it. Just don't neglect the timing belt changes or you'll be sorry.

Before my two Tacoma's I owned a 2.5 Golf. I loved it, it was a peppy car and never had any issues with it. I would never object myself or anyone from buying a VW. They are good vehicles.

I could live out my days knowing I have never owned a VW.

My only gripe I had with VW was the electrical issues. Apparently now they still have issues with electrical. Just an FYI.

My parents 2005 TDI Jetta has been nothing but great.
Only thing we're had done is brakes once and regular oil changes.
A couple minor repairs after I fell in the ditch but that doesn't count against the reliability of the vehicle.:D

I bought an '08 DCSB used in 2010, and traded it in for an new '11 Jetta TDI nearly 18 months later. I loved the car, the mileage, the amenities, and definitely the torque. What I didn't love was the $100 oil changes, and the other expensive maintenance, as well as the fact the air conditioning system (compressor and all) took a dump not a year after I bought the car (luckily it was under warranty). But mostly, I didn't love the fact that it was a car, not a truck, and more specifically not a Toyota Tacoma. I traded it in about three weeks ago, and bought a brand new '13 DCSB 4x4 SR5. Couldn't be happier.

BTW, I also drive 30K+ miles a year, and still traded the car in knowing I would spend $300-$400 a month extra on gas. I guess I am just lucky enough to be able to afford the gas or stupid enough to spend that much money on it. I prefer to look at it the first way :)

Bottom line: Nobody is going to talk you in or out of it. Do what you want. You want a VW get a VW. Are there more reliable cars? Of course. Would you actually enjoy said car? Well I hope so. When I was car shopping I almost purchased at Scion tC. Glad I didn't. Personally the car felt like it was made out of pot metal and bubble gum. I'm sure its amazingly reliable but it just wasn't a nice car IMO. So I bought the GTI. I'm happy with my purchase and I hope you will be too. Happy hunting in whatever you end up in.
