Well changed my rear diff oil to 80w-90(Had 75w-90 w/ LSD..not sure why I thought I had LSD) and still hear the noise that it's been making

When I removed the drain plug there were metal shavings on it and it looked like...sand(texture wise)? Not sure how to describe it. Unfortunately, I didn't remember to take a picture of it.

Also, what is this part call? I tried to torque it down but it would move my truck forwards/backwards so I called it good. Do I have to bend a piece or flatten something? I remember a particular part that involved that, not sure if it was on old pick-ups or all 4x4s.

I assume these are metal shavings as the fluid was being drained. I officially declare my 3rd member 'FUCKED' and not sure what else to do besides let it break one day and replace accordingly :(

 This looks like the pinion flange. Where is your driveshaft? Is this the front of your rear diff?

Pinion flange, got it! Thanks! Never knew what to call it. This is the rear diff, I had just dropped the drive shaft to attempt to tighten this pinion flange thinking maybe I didn't tighten it enough when I replaced my third member seal. Thought maybe that was causing the problem.

No... Tightening the pinion yoke has absolutely nothing to do with a leaking differential. In fact, if you're still using a crush sleeve instead of a solid spacer, there's a good chance that you may have tweaked your bearing preload/pinion depth.

Not sure what you mean by crush sleeve and solid spacers. 3rd member used to leak but the gasket seal was replaced twice with OEM part from local Toyota dealership. Hasn't leak since.

My guess would be that your pinion bearings are wearing. Is there any play if you grab the flange and try to move it side to side or up and down? Even a little play will result in premature wear.

Who installed your diff? Is this a regeared diff?

The circled part should be punched in.

Check out Eriks Toyota Differential Page http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

Quite a bit of good info about how they work, different types etc.

Hope this helps, good luck with diagnosing what is going on with your truck; I know how frustrating this can be!

Nice. It kind of looks like an ARB/Eezi-Awn mix. That's the one purchase I'll probably never end up selling.

Everyone is like that lol. It was killer to find a used one, so I decided to bite the bullet and get on the GB here.

I'll never do an RV or Camper. This RTT is plain awesome. I have no problem sleeping in it for weeks at a time in any weather. Best of all my wife loves and goes everywhere with me. Be prepared for lots of questions. When I was in Alaska there were so many people that would circle around a couple times and then come in and start asking questions. I'd have to give a tour every night we camped. That was before they got popular.

Crap! So the silver part is suppose to be punched in towards the orange part? I remember the first time I took apart the 3rd member to replace the seal my dad 'straightened' something out and I am kicking myself in the ass now for forgetting to punch it back in when re-assembling. Totally skipped that step the second time I had to re-seal it after another leak. And it is stock diff with e-locker.

Thanks! It is frustrating as hell lol and I remember you recently re-geared yours, no? I forget the reason why as well..maybe if things start to look worse it might be a good route for me to go as well or try to find one in a junk yard

That is correct. You tighten the nut and then punch the lip into that groove. That prevents the nut from coming loose. Are you experiencing a leak? If you have a leak at the pinion flange and have replaced the seal then most likely you'll need a new flange. The flange will wear where it meets the seal and will leak.

Looks like another trip to my dads  Currently am not experiencing any leak. Last time it leaked I changed the the gasket seal was about a year ago and it has been good ever since. What do you recommend I check when it comes to a grinding/rubbing noise?

    Thanks guys!

This is the only part I replaced the both times as it was sticking out and causing a leak after X amount of months/miles after replacement. Hope I wasn't confusing you with my terminology.

Random picture I found on google.
