nothing but problems after problems with those cars including the diesels, the electrical work on those cars are worse then GM and Chrysler. There very fun to drive but youll spend more money keeping it running then what your getting in savings with fuel costs. Look for something more reliable then a VW....

A little bit of both. I'm just afraid I will not be as satisfied with any other manufacturer after such great luck with Toyota. On the other hand, Toyota's monumental failure to give us the diesel powered vehicles that dominate the globe really makes me sick. I want something that can tow a light trailer, has a few more creature comforts like heated seats and mirrors, and gets around 40MPG gas or diesel. It must also have comparable space to a subaru outback for dogs and camping gear. 4WD not necessary but a big plus. It would sure be nice if it were more comfortable to ride in but that is lower down on the list of requirements. I did the math and I'll save $3000 year in fuel costs if I get out of the Tacoma. I should probably just keep the taco and buy a used Prius or a civic hatchback for the long haul driving, and Taco for hunting and fishing. But then the truck just becomes another toy and according to my wife I have too many toys already.

Is the VW a good car? Well it is the #1 seller in China and #1 in sales world wide there must be some thing to it. Some one said some thing about fit and finish my Tacoma should be should be as nice. They are complex cars and it takes some one slightly smarter then the car to fix them and the prime reason they are complex is because that is what the American public wanted they are nothing like that over seas. They are expensive to fix but a blast to drive and and my old TDI was the most comfortable car I have ever owned. The diesels have to be driven 30K or more a year to make them cost effective and make them last but there are very few cars out there with in excess of 400K miles on them where it is not unusual for a TDI. Would I buy another one? No but only because I no longer drive 100+ miles a day.

I disagree completely on this point. It isn't because the American Public wanted it this way. I work for a German Company and Everything they build is way Over Engineered and Over Complex.

I agree with the over engineered the Germans are masters of complexity but the interesting thing is that when they are done it works. Yes it is for an American public the overseas cars have things that can't be bought over here like crank up windows etc. you can buy a base no frills car overseas but not in the states.

    I'll concede that ( bolded ).

German engineering lost WW2 for them. The Tiger1 and Tiger 2 tanks were much better tanks than any that the allies had at the time. They were too complex to build rapidly and were too hard to maintain in the field.

The Russians and U.S. both had produceable tanks. Sure it took four Shermans to kill one Tiger, but the U.S. could make 10 Shermans for every 1 Tiger. In one on one combat it sucked to be in a Sherman, but in the overall scheme of things, if you need a 4:1 ratio to have an even match and you've got a 10:1 ratio instead, you're going to win. They weren't the fasted nor did they have the best guns, but they had the numbers and they could be maintained in the field.

Like ants on a roach. The roach don't stand a chance.

You have to step back and look at the size of the country. German air craft could fly upside down they were fuel injected. German tanks were diesel our’s were referred to as "Zippos’" because they were fueled with gasoline. It is a good thing at the time Germany wasn’t as large as the states things may have been a lot different.

actually the Germans lost the war because they opened up two fronts and because Japan bombed Pearl Harbour

    .
True, but even if Hitler didn't invade Russia, he would have been overcome by America's industrial might anyways. True about PH, before then Roosevelt was wanting to get into the war but couldn't with a strong isolationist movement, he needed PH to quash that.

I bought the "new" 2005 jetta when it came out. It was not the TDI, but it was very peppy, decent fuel mileage and we had minimal issues with it mechanically. It was stolen with about 85k on it in 2010 by some dude that had aerated his girlfriend with a steak knife.

Maybe he did me a favor and took it before it shit the bed.

It was mentioned to get the Passat. It uses a different fuel delivery system, and has not has the same issues as the Jetta. It is rated to get better mileage even though it is the bigger car, and it is built in Tennessee.
