I'm a real newb when it comes to wiring. I attached a small LED strip behind my grill, and I want to wire it up so that it's on when my headlights are on. The LEDs are not very bright and there will just be a soft glow behind the grill. I believe the light pointed out below would be a good place to hook the LED wires to. It's on when the headlights are on. There are two wires going to this bulb, one green and one white. See below. I plan to wire in an inline 15amp fuse, just in case. First, is this a good place to connect to? Second, how do I connect the two wires from the LEDs to the green and white wires? If there's a better approach to wiring this up, please let me know. Thanks.

If you go that route then the green is your positive wire and the black is the negative. You can use some quick connects to tap into it. Going with those wires means when you have your parking lights on that the leds will also be on.

Thanks for the help, DR007. Since the parking lights are on when the headlights are on, this should work. Do you think an inline fuse is necessary? I really don't know much (OK, anything) about wiring. What are quick connects and how do I use them to tap into the wires? Thanks.

I'll go to Lowe's tomorrow morning and get those wire connectors. And I'll swap the 15 amp fuse for a 5 amp fuse. I don't know what the voltage is. I bought this online from China, and below is all the info they have online and on the package. If the size of the wire on the LEDs is any indication of the voltage, it must be real low because the wire it super thin (maybe 28-30 gauge).

SMD 5024 24-LED Car LED strip
    Brightens Red light
    Flexible and durable
Water-proof design, suitable for interior & exterior of car use
    Simple installation
Perfect decorative LED strip for your car
    Power supply: DC 12V
    Strip length: 60cm

Its a 12v strip. I just wanted to make sure that it would be ok on that 12v line. Which it will. If you do it like you say you are it should work out fine.

DR007 - Thanks for the help. It's all hooked up and working great. I decided not to use the fuse. I also ran a wire from the same spot to the pickup bed and installed a second small red LED strip. Both light strips work just like I hoped they would.

I understand that the red LEDs behind the grill might be (probably are) illegal. I'm retired and I don't drive much at night. If I get pulled over, I'm guessing the police officer will take one look at me and say (to himself) "crap, he's an old guy," and go easy on me.

    Again, thanks for your help.

Glad it worked out. Post some pics so we can see how it looks.

Could add you a switch in the cab to be able to control them in a cop would pull you over.
