Klein gets my vote over Manziel, Miller

By Doug Harris | Monday, December 3, 2012, 09:54 PM
I sent in my Heisman ballot twice. The first time I did it after Saturday night’s game, it didn’t make it through because of a technical error (OK, actually it was my own inability to follow instructions).

I was able to get it through Monday before the 5 p.m. deadline. But I wish I had two votes — or 102 — because I’d cast them all for Kansas State’s Collin Klein over the odds-on favorite, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, and maybe that would close the gap.

Johnny Football was second on my ballot and Ohio State’s Braxton Miller third. And the reason I picked Klein over Manziel is because I think the SEC is over-rated. There, I said it.

I know announcers go all ga-ga over the SEC, but I can’t stomach seeing the praise lavished on a conference that refuses to play any challenging teams in the non-league schedule and lives on its past reputation.

When they get into conference play and beat each other up, less-than-astute college football followers suddenly think those are quality wins. But how do we really know when they’re so averse to testing themselves outside of league play?

The Big 12 has better competition from top to bottom, and Klein led his team to a conference title with his superb play. Sure, Manziel had better stats, but the SEC had some truly awful teams: Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn and Kentucky. Forget the names on the jerseys and just look at the results. The Big 12 had one sorry program, Kansas.

Here’s all you need to know about the SEC: Texas A&M went 6-2 in the conference this year. Follow me here. That’s Texas A&M, which was an average team in the Big 12 last season and was supposed to get clobbered while making the switch to the big, bad SEC this year.

When I gauge a Heisman winner, I look at who he played. And what Klein did in spearheading a championship run at a school that’s not exactly a traditional power was enough for me. Manziel was good. Very good. And his time will come since he’s only a freshman. But I don’t see him putting up those same numbers if he still played in the Big 12.

Miller wasn’t named a Heisman finalist, but he should have been. He led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record. They would have been a .500 team without him, in my book. The reason running back Carlos Hyde was such a force over the last two games was because Wisconsin and Michigan committed so many defenders to stopping Miller.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti T’eo had a great year, and I don’t have a problem with him being a Heisman finalist. But he doesn’t deserve to be there ahead of Miller simply because a defender only has an impact on a relatively small amount of plays, unlike a quarterback who has the ball in his hands half the time.

I think Manziel will win the Heisman (SEC apologists will love that, though they need to remember he thought he was signing up to play for a Big 12 school). And the race will be fun to watch next year to see if he can repeat or if Miller can overtake him. I’m betting on the latter.

even ohio state fans laughed at this writer's column

^ I hear it all the time! Funny how nobody wants to talk about Missouris success or how OU shut johnny down on maybe 4 plays in the entire game.

That article makes me laugh. The SEC lives on past accomplishments. Yea, like the last 7 years.

And without Manziel, aTm would have been a door mat in either the SEC or the Big 12.

How does the big 12 have better top to bottom competition? Texas, OU, and then........?

    UGA
    Bama
    LSU
    Florida
    SC

Those 5 teams were ALL in the running for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP last year. That guy is a joke.

I'd like to think our coaches had something to do with our success not just Johnny. Everyone seems to forget that our football program was completely new this year and can't be blamed for previous failures.

Your coaches are going to have to be part of the success as teams see Johnny Online-Classes for the second time this year. He's a freak of nature, but it's going to be tougher. Hell, Alabama made adjustments in a halftime that damn year won us the game.

Not saying aTm and Johnny Cabo won't be good again, but it'll be tougher.

No argument about it being tougher. Some teams took us lightly this past season an that won't happen again. But Sumlin has proven he can coach with expectations.

Working out pretty well. One way in which it's severely lacking is the forum I found... SubaruOutback.org is fine and all, but it's no TW.

No... I'd start one if I thought anybody else would post in it. It's mostly older people (and I guess I'm getting close to their age, too), and the threads don't move as fast.

I dunno... Just glad y'all let me stick around here.

Probably because its an outback forum and not just a Subaru forum. The young people I see driving Subaru's are usually the Impreza. Is yours a manual?

This is probably true. Soobie's aren't "old people cars," but Outbacks are at least "middle-aged-people cars."

No, not a manual. Three of my first four cars were manuals, but my wife has some kind of mental block against learning how to drive one, so I've driven automatics since we've been married. I miss it sometimes, but not all that much.
