Locked 2wd vs open 4wd

Which would make it futher off-road? A 2wd locked or 4wd open?

 

Probably depend on tires and terrain. if a 4wd just has street tires and 2wd have a/t or even M/T then it would probably go farther.

same tires and all, than idk. i’d say it would kinda an even match. 4wd would probably do hills better. but ruts and stuff 2wd may do better.

I have done this both ways...the 4x4 will certainly do far better with the same tires and clearance.

4x4, no competition.

4x4 open has two wheels spinning. Opposite corners, usually.
4x2 locked has two wheels spinning. Across from each other.

Due to relationship in location the 4x4 should always have a better chance at having one powered wheel with traction.

 

totally depends on the terrain. in the desert locked 2wd does great 90% of the time (for me). washes, silt beds, sand etc....

4wd shines when it comes to hills, or big rocks where you are crawling at >5.

As an example, rocky gap road in red rock nevada. I can do most the trail with just locked rear end, but once you get into any kind of dirt hills, or very un even terrain I get stuck. Theres a lot of times on that trail you are only on two tires (front left, right rear) just tipping back and fourth. With 2wd locked I have had the one tire dig in which makes me stuck. Where as 4wd I still would have a tire getting traction on the front. ( you did say open 4wd though) But for arguments sake, if you have 4wd and a rear locker..you also have ATRAC which would help you out in that situation to some extent.

 

Does great, but a 4wd does great too. One perk you have is you don't have to worry about CV axles when trying to maximize travel up front.

i'd put my money on the 4x4.

I have a locker and it's nice, but it can only go so far.

 

While this seems to fit in with his question I think he is speaking theoretically so should assume that they have equal tires and such. A 4wd can get mud tires just as easy as a 2wd can.

But yes, tires can make a huge difference.

I have a trd offroad. I have the locker mod and choose to run 2wd . I still use my 4wd as well though
