    :rofl: So is there any difference between the ebay bypasses you posted and the bypass shocks you posted from poly? I am new to this long travel stuff and haven't put in my research yet... Basically is there a difference between a smooth body shock and a bypass shock? Does the bypass dampen more or less agressively or sooner or later than a smooth body? I was under the impression that ideally you want two shocks per wheel. A regular shock and a bypass. Is that close to true? haha

    The ones on ebay are used, the ones on poly are new. Bypass- bypasses same thing. Smooth body and bypasses are different as the bypasses as bypass external tubes that bypass the oil inside , but on those bypass tubes there is an adjustment for the person to tune them to whatever desired "stiffer , softer ,etc".

    I see. Why would you want to bypass the oil though? Wouldn't that make the shock not dampen very well?

    To put it simply, it allows you to have different valving at different points through the travel. When the oil "bypasses", it blows through a specific tube that has an easily adjustable valve on it. Bypasses can be on compression or rebound side of things.

    It makes tuning easier and allows you to have a softer ride during your first few inches of shock travel and to stiffen it up as you move through the shock's stroke.

    Bypasses are position sensitive.
    Allows you to have have less dampening through the chop so it's not so bumpy and more dampening for the big hits.
    And with leaf springs, you want the leafs to drop out as fast as possible, even with a light valve stack that's difficult due to the natural dampening of leaf bushings. Rebound bypasses allow the axle to drop out much cleaner.

    So you can adjust the flow, like on the tubes for rebound, adjust one way and you get faster rebound and opposite for the other way, same thing with compression adjust one way and it will make the shock stiffer, and likewise for softness. Now this is greatly an advantage over smooth bodies shocks as those have no external adjustment and any change of the shock you would have to open them up and play with the valving. Now do you really want to go out offroading and decide you want your shocks stiffer. Then have to take off your shocks ,take them apart ,have all the correct tools and put them back toghether? Or Would you rather get pretty much two tools out and adjust the shock and hop back in the truck and be on your way! haha.

    This is a quick easy way to sum it up.

    It is, but not very many people know how to tune them properly, they just turn tubes and call them good.

    From what I gathered, smoothies would have the same amount of compression throughout the entire stroke while bypasses can have really light compression for the first few inches then a little heavier for the next few inches and then maybe light again for a couple and then the last few inches are really heavy. Or however else you would like to tune them and depending on how many bypasses they have.
