    29"

Ill find out how long a tundra axle is.

And yes, that's true. But yours seems longer already then mine. So might not..

The redline is about 4.5" and the orange line is about 1.25". I'll have to get back to you on the yellow line since I am at work now (looking at the pic, 3-3.5" would be a good guess I think). Looking at it now I imagine the yellow line is the size of the opening in the knuckle.

    Ahhhh nice,

And a tundra axle is 27.5" long!

So already stocks are longer by 1.5"...and the diff is 1.5" wider...holy shit..could work..

    Edit:

    Actually tundra is about 28"

So stock 1st gen with tundra axles would be 72" wide

Stock 2nd gen is 79" wide..

    Damn

    Hmm...
My cv must compress a lot. I didn't think it was stretched out that much when I measured it. haha
    [IMG]

It says 25 7/16" and 30 splines on both sides.

    24 1/8" 27 spline inner and 26 spline outer for a 1st gen.

    Or...

24 7/32" 27 spline inner and 30 spline outer, both of these came up for a '96 Tacoma

There is only one listed for the 2003 Tacoma. The 27/30 spline one that is 24 7/32" long.

Is there any reason that the 2nd gen diff is better than a first? For either LT or SAS?

Just wondering if there's a benefit that would make the amount of engineering/troubleshooting required, that you'll have to do, worth it?

My thought process is; I wouldn't wanna be the first person to do an brand new, very extreme modification. I wanna know how the first 100 people did it, and learn from their mistakes, especially on a daily driver.

2nd gen front diff uses an 8" ring gear and bigger/stronger cv axles. 1st gen has a 7.5" ring gear. 1st gens running 35's can snap cv axles like twigs. Going bigger than 35's is just asking to replace cv's every day. haha (Although Silas is fairing well so far). 2nd gens run 35's all the time with very few issues and there are several running 36's and 37's with no issues either.

    This^^

better CV axles and stronger diff. Plus ill lock the front so stronger is better.

Yea its never been done..for good reason. Look at the numbers. Not even close. and the axle splines are also different..so that causes an issue as well.

But..my truck is not going to be a DD pretty soon. Hell it really hasn't been all winter. I have no prob with trying new stuff no one has done. And this..this could lead to some goo stuff.

as far as it looks, the diff will bolt right up. I think ill need spacers or something maybe to drop it down as it is probably too tall and could be hitting the oil pan. But if i have a 3uz in there..might not be an issue. Plus ill have beefy skids anyways so i won't care lossing about .25-.5'' of clearance up front.

The tricky part is going to be to get the CV length right with a LT kit, and somehow overcome the 30 spline to 27 spline, which for all i know could just be swapping on a 1st gen outer knuckle onto 2nd gen CV. Im not sure yet.

Im really just thinking so far..but if it can work..ill give it a go. I don't have a need for SAS..so LT is what i am gonna do..this could be a bit extreme..but will be fun. and this won't happen from probably a long while. A) need money for it B) need parts for it C) i think ill need a custom LT kit..but it'll probably be 4'' over and with some nice travel numbers..

As for overcoming the 30-27 spline I would shoot for going to 30-30 spline. You can't run manual hubs on it, but it will be stronger. Brant did some sort of conversion on his 1st gen (can't remember what it was) that results in using a CV axle that shrunk down in size at the hub and he snapped that smaller section off all the time he said.

I'm thinking so depends on the spindle hub diameters. If a 2nd gen cv will fit though a 1st gen spindle you may be alright. I'm kind of doubting it though. Hell with the way things are going it may be easier to just fab a 2nd gen LT kit on your truck. haha

could be..i wonder how much taller your spindles are..jesus..could be like 6'' of lift with the LT and spindles..hahaha

and there is not way the 1st gen spindle will work with a 2nd gen CV..i doubt you could just swap hubs..

Yeah I wondered about that. I also wonder if a 1st gen LT kit will bolt up to 2nd gen spindles though. Do they make a spindle lift for 4x4 1st gens? Honestly I doubt our CV's are that much taller than yours. Guess we'll have to measure them. haha

    to the tacos!!!

yea i bet they are taller. Probably an inch or so..

and no not really. I don't think there are any spindle lifts for any tacoma that is 4x4.

and i bet the geometry wouldn't be right with a 1st gen kit and 2nd gen spindle.

Probably have to fit a full 2nd gen kit with spindles lol
