How To Get Around Locking Lugs

I've recently gotten a '96 and its has the toyota locking lugs, its had a couple owners and i am without the key. I called the local dealer and they said i'd have to bring it in to get a key made then about 10 days later they'd have a key for me, its strictly an off road vehicle so no insurance, plates or registration. The parts guy said maybe i could fit a slightly larger socket on the locked one and possibly take it off. Is there any trick or tip somebody could offer?

Maybe grind a 1/4" straight line into in. That way you could fit a beefy flathead in there. Then figure out how to turn it. Maybe vice grips where the flathead goes in....idk just a thought

 

you can hammer a smaller socket over them and then use it to unscrew.

 

i've seen some tire shops just strip it off (of course making the locking lug nut useless at that point), but it comes off

 

^^^sorta what he said but u need 4 sockets a little smaller.beat the sockets on and remove the locks.ive found that u junk the sockets once u beat them on,but it does work.good luck.

I'd grind a flat spot on two sides and use a reallly big cresent wrench....

remember to eat you're wheaties first

 

Another thought that would not damage the locknut woud be to put some heat to it and trya and get a visegrips/pipe wrench on it and it should come off pretty easy.

My son had this problem a few weeks ago and used 3/4" sockets hammered onto the lugs to get them off. He got the sockets at Lowes, so they weren't very expensive.
