I wonder how a CVT would perform in offroading? Probably not very well... Not sure though, I don't know how they work as far as wanting low gear ratios for offroading. That and I wonder how durable they would be for that kind of abuse.

cvt xfer case has some serious potential if it were strong enough.

It's pointless without an adequate sample size. Even if you did all those tests and one was the clear winner, it would still be an N=1. You would need 30 of each vehicles to give an adequate population. k-factor would be way too weak any other way.

Who wants to volunteer their truck for destructive testing?

Mine of course is new, so I can't use it. If it lost, people would say, "yeh, but it's not broken in yet.." and if it won people would say "yeh but it's new so of course it won.."

    Mine just isn't an option..

Output shaft alone doesnt indicate total strength. That being said, the auto can handle more torque.

But with a manual you pick or judge your power better, more power if needed up hill for instance.

gear facewidths, bearing size, and case design are all factors in the overall strength of the transmission. Sure the shaft size is a factor, but not the only one...

Autos use planetary gears, which are inhearantly stronger than the straight gears in a manual. Autos, in many cases, even have higher tow ratings. Manuals are cheap to repair, easy to maintain, thus most people think they are stonger. The autos have been regarded as being "weak"er than manuals, from way back in the days they first made an appearance. They used weaker parts, to save weight. Thus they werent able to achive any longevity. In the Tacoma, miss a few shifts in the manual, and your gonna be finding out what its like to replace a syncro, or two.

You can do the same in modern autos.

Manuals are, because I only hear complaints of automatics going to the shop. So there.

    :stirthepot: :deadhorse::worthless: prove it's stronger.

 This is the dumbest argument ever and you hear it all the time. Leads me to believe these people have never driven an auto. Autos can downshift just like manuals, autos just can upshift like a manual, but how often do you need to do that really.

Bam! This right here! There's always misconceptions floating around.

    X2

    If you couldn't manually shift it , why would they give you L 2 3 4 ?

    Why not just D N R P ?

I have driven many autos. Try to down shift and if it thinks its too fast it won't. I can down shift to which ever gear I want, when I want, don't have to want for the auto to think its safe. Also cant rock a auto off road when stuck. I have rocked a manual out of many places. Auto won't do that.

    Manuals only way off road.

    City slicker=auto

Edit: I give my mom a 09 sport cause it was a auto and it SUCKED.

Edit2: and I can drive mine from 1st to 3rd to 5th to save gas or to be lazy. Can't skip gears in a auto

The only way my Tacoma won't downshift is if it will red line by doing so
