NICE! I hadn't compared them when we bought my wifes Tacoma. Another win for the Auto. Auto's really hit their MPG stride when everyone started going away from the 4 speed and into the 5, 6, 7, and now 8 speed Autos :)

Really autos can do burnouts easier. Powerbraking. Especially if you have a linelock for your brakes.

this is because of the final drive ratio. if they were geared the same
the manual would rate higher. I am a big fan of Toyota automatics...makes life easier when
the Taco (or 4runner) is creeping in 4lo and hauling delicate stuff over bony roads

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That's just with the V6 I believe. My 4 banger manual was rated higher than the same truck with the auto if I remember correct. I loved the auto in the V6 though when I test drove it, if I had a V6 it would be an auto no doubt.

Our V6's can be a little slacking on the power side to do much a of burnout unless you red line when you drop the clutch then you might light one tire up for a ways if you don't blow something up when you do that.

I doubt it. that would mean the tranny would have to increase mpg over 10%.

I also disagree with this. If it were that easy I'm sure Toyota would have done it because they are driven so hard by the gevernment to maintain high mpg ratings. My guess is that the torque multiplication effect from the torque converter unlocking allows the auto to make enough torque to be able to use the higher gear ratio. I imagine if the manual had the same final drive as the auto, you would either have to give it so much more throttle to maintain speed that you lose fuel economy anyway or you would just drive in fifth gear every where because 6th didn't make enough torque thus losing fuel economy and making 6th gear useless.

Kind of like when I went to 33" tires. 5th gear (overdrive for me) couldn't make enough torque to keep me going at 75mph so it would spend a lot of time in 4th gear instead. Once I regeared the extra torque from the gears and higher RPM allows my tranny to almost never shift out of 5th gear and even though I am running at 700-800 rpm higher at 75mph I didn't even lose a whole mpg, it was almost completely unaffected.

With a smooth surface and water you can dump it at 2k in 1st and start burning rubber from there

False. The 4.0 transmission is the same as the V8 Runner.

    He said redline though:taco:
And I have reason to believe it is pretty much the same tranny on the 4.6L V8 2nd Gen Tundras too. They just added a 6th gear to it. Hard to say what else they may have changed about it to though.
