Show off those aftermarket stereo systems!

I kept the stock touch-screen head, and added an AudioControl LCQ-1 Crossover/line source, a Precision Power Sedona-Series S340-4 channel power amp (60W/Ch), Toyota Sat radio module, and a Kicker HS8 powered 8" subwoofer. Sounds great, under $1000, and installed it myself.

That's probably exactly what I should have done instead of replacing the factory head unit. I take it that is basically an equalizer? I couldn't stand not being able to tune the factory radio, but now I can't stand the non-factory look, which I knew was gonna happen but didn't think I had a choice. I added my Kicker 8" shallow mount CVT and Kicker Amp from my last vehicle to add the punch. I considered adding an external equalizer but wasn't sure of my options. Let me know your thoughts. It's really more than just an EQ/Crossover. It generates the sub out from the rear channel inputs, Expands (by EQ) the sound range to compensate for the factory head's low-frequency roll off, works as a line input, and much more - Here's the Mfgr's info on it -

Makes a day and night of difference. Add a mid-power amplifier and sub (like I did) and the thing sounds great.

You are correct about limited tone control on the stock HU, but with the Sub level control for the HS8 (mounted in the center console - in reach/out of sight), you'd be surprised at how well I can tailor the sound. Still not as good as a 9 or even 7 band EQ unit, but I shouldn't be messing with those while I'm driving anyhow. And I can still add one in the future if I decide to go that route. I had a 9-band unit in my 94 pickup, but now, all they make are rotary-control units, and mostly 5 or 7 band. If I could find a good TRUE parametric 4-band (not just para for the sub), I'd consider that pretty strongly.

 

Which HU do you have now? Looks good in your pictures to me.

 

Actually there is a write up on it on these forums. It was written a couple years ago and it is using a Tundra plug that fits into the switch blanks on our trucks. When the '12s came out I think Toyota used the same part as the Tundra in the Tacoma, so the wiring should be the same. It looked like a relatively simple task. I can't seem to figure out how to pop the plug panel out of my '12 which is the only reason I haven't done it. It's a really good write up though. I'll post the name of the thread if I find it again.

Thanks, it's a Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS. Don't get me wrong, it's as nice as an aftermarket head unit is gonna look, but it's still nowhere near as clean as the factory look, which is what I really want. All that wasted space since there isn't a install kit specific to each head unit makes for a bunch of "surround", which looks like crap to me. I need an 8" screen to fill the void, but I'm not willing to spend that kind of money just to fill the space, ya know? It'll do for the time being.

Installed a Pioneer AVH-X2500BT about a week ago (with

$68 ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Interface

ASWC-1 steering wheel control adapter) and today put Polk DB series components up front and coaxials in the back (6.5"). Currently powered by the headunit, but I have an Alpine 5-channel amp on the way, as well as sub/enclosure. Already way better than stock, but low-end is definitely lacking.

I went with the Scosche speaker adapters and really had no issues (what Crutchfield sells/uses). Only issue I had is the coaxials in the rear (double cab), with the required adapter plate, it was slightly too tall...and the tweeter hits the grille on the door panel. Not something you'd notice without looking for it, but still was bummed about that. Might throw the same component woofers back there, since I am just adding them for fill anyways.

For the tweeters, I cut out the stock "tweeter" and cut off the bottom part with a dremel. I epoxied the new mount in and slid the tweeter in...turned out great and was free!

 

I went with the kenwood DDX470 and sony and alpine speakrs installed my self

Love that sub. Can it be wired to stock setup for extra bump. Need a amp?

 

Something something 2500bt. Love this thing. Auto connect to my iPad or iPhone. Also got the bypass so my kids can watch movies on the road.

 

I found space in the door panel that you pull off, just used some molding tape to hold it down. Next time I have the doors off I want to try to find something a bit better.. I'd like to find a good place on the door itself, so I don't have wires going between the door and the panel, but it works just fine as is now.

Have you found a better location that's close?
