That's one good reason to always connect to the positive terminal and a metal grounded part. If you hook it up "backwards" (pos to neg, neg to engine/chassis), current will flow through the negative battery cable, not the vehicle's electrical components.

Might kill the jumping car's battery, but won't kill either vehicle's electronics.

 

The fuse box should have a cover that pops off. No need to unbolt anything.
Look for any fuses that may look burnt to start with.
replace with the same amp rating

There is indeed a 100A or 120A "alt" fuse "bolted" into the fuse panel beside the battery. If its blown, its a PITA to change, but not the end of the world. You have to cut a tie strap or two where the wiring exits the bottom of the box, then carefully pry the tabs back so you can lift the panel with all the fuses and relays up out of the box. Once its up an inch or two, you can remove the 10mm head bolts, and replace it. Then, check all the other fuses, both in that panel and behind the change drawer in the dash. Replace any blown ones, have the battery tested and replace if needed, cross your fingers, and try to start it up.

Laura, glad to hear that you got it running. If it were my vehicle and to avoid problems from latent damage, I would fully charge the battery with an external charger and test the battery and charging system. Many auto parts or battery stores will it for free and it just takes a few minutes.

 

No Colour is correct Nunavut's Location is CA. Oz is a true Canuck .

 

It is my understanding that reversing polarity while jumping a 12-volt car battery was applying a short across a 24-volt battery (two 12-volt batteries wired in series) and that a voltage spike that could damage the electronics before a fuse would open. I believe the reason for making the last jumper/charger connection from negative terminal of the donor's battery to the frame/block of the vehicle with the dead battery was to significantly reduce the possibility that a spark might ignite any residual hydrogen gas around the battery.

 

What happened to the other vehicle he jumped it from??

 

Ha that is strange I tough blocking diode is built in now into fuse box. In old times blocking diode would be right beside positive battery cable.

 

Well there's your problem. It was abooot the difference between the word 'color' and 'colour' which I KNEW was going to cost someone dearly someday. When will our great nations ever come to an agreement?

Yep. Keeps the spark away from any explosive gas that might be around the battery.

If not...there will be a main fuse...like 100+ amp fuse. That most likely got puffed. Check/replace every fuse before moving on to replacing main components. That's where it gets expensive.
