I got 18.64 today on my 2nd tank of premium, thought that was pretty good considering when I first got it it was more like 16. plus it beats my wife's Volvo xc90-then again hers is a V8.

    +1

    5-10mph can gain 2-3 mpg.
My worst tanks have been sitting in "holiday getaway" traffic on Friday in Los Angeles... and on the interstate in New Mexico and Texas rolling the 80mph limit.

At least in Canada , Ethanol free means higher octane

I believe 91 is the only one you can get ethanol free

Hmmm wasn't expecting smartass comments. DUH... I drive speed limit or lower, don't store heavy stuff in the cab or bed of truck, keep the oil changed properly, and do all reccomended maint. Let me also reply that I drive better than my wife. When I drive the 4runner it gets better than when she drives it. I thought some die hard 'Taco-heads'at MAY know of the actual technical & 'secrets of the industry' mods for better mileage. Guess I will keep searching the interwebs with my question. Thanks for no help guys.

people say the “smartass comments” because their is a search function on the forum,(and 10+ other threads on discussing the exact same thing! They're really is not much you can do other then what all was said! Also they are not exactly the same engines, and the weight of the 4 runner and taco is different and i’d be willing to bet the gearing is different. Thats a cold hard truthful fact! take it how you want but thats just how it is.

Get a Scangage and it'll show you when you are wasting fuel.

Dude, there is no "secrets of the industry" mods for better mpg.

Keep searching the interwebs until you find someone with snake oil and testimonials that prove nothing, then waste your money with no positive results.

    Good riddens.

My comment was a serious suggestion. :)
In my 2006 Tacoma I drove for 5 yrs, I had a scangauge & the best mpg resulted from keeping my rpms under 2k.
My Tundra with the 4.6L "gas saver" lol, was the same thing.
Mat it & the mpgs went deep six.
It is pretty well documented all around here.
There is no secret formula or chip or taking the secondary cannister filter off or additive etc.
The narrower tires with highway tread that offer less rolling resistance & keeping the rpms down make for best fuel economy.
Best of luck with your truck.

    What are riddens?

Oh, yeah we're not supposed to be wags in this thread anymore.

But laying off the gas pedal really does make a huge impact. And it's not just "driving the speed limit or under" because you can rocket off the line and floor it right up to 35 mpg and get worse mileage than grandmothering it off the line. And why are you doing 35 in the first place?! Maybe you drive "better" than your wife, but that's not really a good metric, and we don't know how your wife drives.

Sounds like you need to optimize your tire size, fuel octane, hp and gear ratio, then drop and fully skirt your truck, hit the wind tunnel to tweak, add some anti turbulance fins round the cab, and then get over the fact that you can't get 40mpg out of a taco!

No, but you CAN get a solid 20mpg by learning how to drive more efficiently using the ScanGage. $150 bucks

    Hello OP,
I have BFG A/T's in LT265/75r16. My Tacoma came with P265/70r16. I did it for the look, traction, and to get my speedometer to match my GPS reading. Not only did I increase the overall diameter by 1" but I increased the weight by going from 4 ply to 10 ply rated tires.

Having said all this, I have noticed 2 things regardless of my tires. Higher octane gas "seems" to last longer than lower octane gas and driving my truck at 65 MPH VS 75 MPH does make the gas last longer.

Also, gas with Ethanol does last less. I just haven't noticed if any stations in Miami have "Ethanol free" gas. I use BP or Shell.

Good luck. I hope this helps you
    :)

OP doesn't actually say what his mpg is. If he's getting 19-20 in a V6 then that's as good as it'll get. imo Foot pedal mod is the most important for mpg... keep the rpm under 2k at all times.

rickmeseke, u decreased your tire diameter and therefore increased your revolutions per mile compared to stock. Unless you're accounting for the 3.7-3.9% discrepancy on the trip/odometer you're just lying to yourself (not accusing, more of an fyi).

I think OP is mad that we told him the truth, and that we did not tell him the "secrets of the industry” they he wanted and was expecting. Even thought there is none.

Its complete oppisite for me, no way would I run with 245s if you notice traveling at 70mph your RPMs are at like 2200 rpms with 245s and with 265s on highway your sitting at 2000 RPMs which would get you better highway mileage, so thats not true always running smaller tires
