Simple, yet effective ABS cut

Ive just been taking out ABS fuse #2 to disable my ABS. It gets a little annoying taking out the fuse. I didn't really want to cut into any wires either. Decided to put in a little switch to make things easier and quicker. This is how I did it.

Here's what you need

(and a little bit of wire)

Took out the fuse I wanted to put a switch to. I put a small wire from the fuse box, to one of the terminals of the fuse. Then from the other terminal on the fuse, to a switch, and back to the fuse box.

Basically, plug the female connectors into the terminals where the fuse would go. Then flip the switch on or off, ABS on or off. I did a short version, to keep it simple and have the switch in the fuse box.

I will extend the side with the switch to the can, with a factory switch.

My truck doesn't have VSC or ATRAC. So I don't have to worry about those. This is a pretty simple way to cut your ABS and not have to worry about splicing into wires in your engine bay.

 

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you want to disable the ABS?

Is that 12ga wire and is the switch rated for 30A minimum? If not, you'd be better off reinstalling the fuse and installing a switch inline with pin 4 of the 1B1 connector. See the ABS w/out locker thread for more info. Best of all, all wiring mods stay inside the cab, and it can be switched on the fly, with no need to cycle the key off to reset.

 

For offroad use.

 

I am planning do do your mod! How do you end up? do you run a 12g wire in the cabin?

 

I still have it like this lol. I'm thinking of putting a real matching switch inside the cab still. But it has been workin perfect so far.

 

Put a 30A relay under the hood. Put the switch in the cab.

 

Hey Spoonman, that's a snazzy idea. I'm just looking into disabling ABS and all the wiring mods are scaring me off. I don't care about a switch, I'd just like to pull a fuse.

Just to clarify, pulling ABS No2, the smaller amp fuse in the engine fuse box worked for you? Did it disable anything else? Did you get a persistent dash light? Thank you.

 

Okay i need a better explanation besides "Its better for offroading" what disadvantages does having your ABS system put you when driving? What are you gaining by disabling it?

 

Same here, I'd like to do it to mine and have it off permanently, anyone who is a good driver should be much better off without it. I personally think the ABS in these trucks is more of a hazard than a convenience on snow and ice.

 

There's a lot of discussion on TW about ABS and why a lot of folks don't like. Certainly more learned and mechanically inclined people than I have tackled the question. I can only speak from my experience.
ABS systems can be scary in the snow. If you grow up driving in the ice and snow then you know to stay calm, pump the brakes, turn into the skid...you get the idea. ABS kicks in and basically pumps the brakes for you and it's supposed to preserve steering control, it's for people who freak out and just mash the brake. I've never liked ABS myself and after reading how touchy it is in the Tacoma, I want it turned off.
Dunno man, definitely a personal preference thing.

 

ABS INCREASES stopping distances , particularily on snow , this is why I hate it , and it is definitely sensitive on these trucks for some reason

 

I was under the impression that it is shut off in 4wd, at least it is in 4lo, are you talking about just 4hi?
