depends on what size 245, you can get 245 the same height as 265, and it would be alot less surface area and weight than a 265.

I don't know why everyone thinks shells kill mpg. I had a fair boost when I got mine on the highway. Myth busters did a test and found that the best fuel econ was in a normal truck bed without a shell and with the tailgate up. But they did the test in long bed fords. I know that my 5 ft bed has alot different aerodynamics than a 8 ft ford beds.

Also for some reason I did see an increase in mpg when I had my bed completely loaded with oak. I was taking it super easy considering I was on the bump stops, cruising between 55-60 and I got 23-24 mpg. I was blown away. Don't make explain... I have no idea.

I actually did a little hwy driving on this last tank. ultragage confirmed an avg mpg of 17.1!!!!!! I DID IT!!!

Ok, now I'll stop celebrating, because it's not that great. 4x4 v6 dc mpg just sucks and I've had to accept that.

Guy at work has a ford raptor and rides around without the gate. Swears his mileage is better without it. I saw that mythbusters too, but lets be honest.. their methods are more for entertainment. They are stuntmen, special effects experts and radio control robot enthusiasts, not scientists.

Tacomas get progressively worse mileage the farther over 70 mph you go.

Tires, traffic, route, style, mods all play into the mileage game.

Toyota has the secret about Tacoma gas mileage hidden in the middle of Japan. It's like the Caramilk secret, nobody knows. You should to go Japan and find out because you're not going to get that information here.

You must have not been on the internet for that long, especially a forum. If you're getting upset because of some little comments that people are making, maybe you should take a break. Not everything on the internet is going to be true. Not every person you interact with on the internet is going to be nice. If you think that everyone is going to come and give you the antidote to better mileage you aren't going to get that here, especially if you don't search. Like others have said, "there are 1000 threads on this already". So if you happened to putting your energy into searching instead of getting all uptight over some comments we make, I'm sure you and us will be better off.

    Have a nice day!

Keep rpm's under 2k, don't go above 65mph on highway, don't take off fast ease into it and you can achieve 21mpg in the late spring/summer/early fall months. Check out my fuelly, it CAN be done. :)

Your sence doesn't make sense. ;)

... and the OP should probably take a bus. His fuel bill would go way down.

    Well aren't you special... :)

j/k - hopefully I can get there with summer gas and synthetic oils. I'm already a pretty conservative driver.....

Super industry secret if the OP is still lurking:

Those of us who get 23+ duct taped an egg to our accelerator and we don't break it.

And after that egg being down there over the summer, I'm damned well not going to break it!

Its all in the speed. Its hard to drive a bit slower than most cars, but hey mpg is mpg!

I am just disgusted by the 'run on' decelleration that the computer makes the engine do to burn fumes for emmision purposes.

I know OP is probably gone by this point, but the engines aren't exactly the same. The engine codes are the same but heads on the motors are different. The tacoma has VVTi and the 4 runner has dual VVTi, both on intake and exhaust valves. Essentially the 4 runner is a bit more of an efficient engine and gets 34 more HP.
