Install went smooth once I tapped a couple more threads in. Trigger is super smooth and light

so my grandpas 30-30 is starting to get wore-out and he needs a new whitetail fetcher, he handled dad's and my AR and he wants to know what a good deer caliber would be for the AR platform.
I recommended the 243 WSSM, 300 blackout, 6.8 SPC, and 7.62x39, any others to recommend? he really likes the ergo's and the ability to own multi calibers with only one gun.
The range he'd be hunting would be ~70 yards, with a max of ~160 yards.
he would also like the cost of ammo to be ~ the same as 30-30 (75-85c a round?)

EDIT: i forgot to mention he likes the head/ neck shots on the deer
and he'll only pay $600, so we'll probably be looking at used guns.

For deer I'd go 6.8 or 300 but ammo will be expensive an AR-10 might be a better alternative

    Why not just get 7.62x51/.308?

    they're pretty expensive, the m1a (?) is ~ 800 used isn't it?
    i have very little knowledge of semi-auto 308's, theres the m1a (?) FAL (i think they're 308),and thats all i'm aware of.

i just was informed he'll only pay $600

I've been talking to my cousin (big gun guy) and he told me I should look at a AK or bolt gun.
He doesn't have to have it soon, so he has a while to decide.

I wouldn't use an AK for hunting, not accurate enough

I was wondering about the accuracy of them, but the Internets down and I'm on my phone, so I'm not gonna be doing any research till its back up.

The PA m3 is the red dot I'm gonna get eventually, I've heard nothing but good things about them.

    This.

Remington 700 would be an awesome deer gun. One of the most accurate out of the box firearms you can buy. Lots of different calibers to choose from. 7.62x52/.308 is a very versatile round. Will take down pretty much any North American Animal with ease.

I'd buy it in 300 win mag. Only because my local Walmart always has that in stock. Lots of it in stock

My cousin has a 700, I like it and he likes it.
I'll have to look into it, my gpa thinks he wants 308 or 243, but he wants to know if a 243 will punch through the scull of a deer.( he doesn't want to ruin the meat with a heart/lung shot)
300 is a awesome cartridge, but it's to much for a 77 year old man who's had shoulder surgery.

    For sure with the .243
Ive had a few over the years and taken several deer, hogs, and yotes. A headshot with a .243 using a 100gr bullet would basically be like an explosion of the brain! haha

Also the 7mm-08 would be a good choice for him. Its between the .243 and the .308. a 7mm08 with a 120-140 gr bullet would detstroy a head. Also ammo is easy to find for it.

I'd definitely recommend a 300 BLK Remington 700. That is a great gun for deer hunting and with the right ammo there will be very little recoil.

All around a fantastic gun, I have a several 300 BLK AR's and love them so much I just had a 300 BLK bolt gun built on a 700 action with a custom barrel, AICS 2.0, and a Nightforce NXS Compact 2.5 - 10 x 32 scope. THe thing is impressive and when I stick my Thunderbeast 30P-1 on there with subsonic ammo, it's quieter than some BB guns.
