4Banger and 35s Q

Yea it's my daily driver and I don't go on the highway much at all till summer time.

 

Next time I fill up ill post a pic of my tripmeter and the gaspump screen.showing how much gas I used and you guys can see for yourself

 

Not BS, I was getting right about 20 highway mpg on stock 4.30 gears.
Dropped down to 17.5-18 when I went to 5.29s, @ 65mph running 2850 RPMs and speedo reading 74mph

 

Yeah stock 4.30s

 

I could be wrong, but I thought stock gearing depended on several factors. 'Stock' could be a couple of different ratios

 

He is a first gen 4 cylinder first Gens could come with I think between 3.73 to 4.56 stock depending on cab/engine/drivetrain combination

The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
First digit:
A = 7.5" ring gear
B = 8" ring gear
Next two digits:
01 = 3:42
02 = 3:58
03 = 4:10
04 = 4:56
05 = 3:15
06 = 3:91
07 = 4.30
Last digit:
A = 2 Pinion, Open
B = 4 Pinion, Open
C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.

Edit- Didn't see Jeff was an '06. I have no idea if 2nd gens can come stock with different ratios depending on the model

 

i have 5.29s in my 99 2.7 with 6 inch fabtech lift on 33s and the thing hauls ass!! i have some other things done to it but still the gears can make a big difference. i know i would have a problem with 35s. i say you go ahead and get the 5.29s its worth every cent.

I have 35s with a 6" lift with stock gears! Bogs like hell, I'm putting the 3.88 gears in it just to give it more go because its my daily driver.

 

He's got the manual trans.

I too got 20 mpg highway w/35s on my 4 cyl. I plan to re-gear to 4.88 though. it sucks getting up to speed.

 

I went off my scan gauge, speed calibrated based on GPS. Its funny though ive never been able to get over 22mpg average on this truck. Granted ive always had larger than stock tires. 265/75/16 21-22 at best.285/75/16 21 at best. 315/75/16 20 at best. around town 17-19 with any of these configurations. Will 4:88 gears bring me back up to that 22? probably not but id really like some second gear tire chirping like the old days

I used to be able to chirp these tires in second with 265s. Im just saying i used to do it. Not sure if the later models have a bunch of new add ons but i dont even have abs on my truck (disabled). I have long travel on my truck now, factor in the height and gained track width i still got 20mpg round trip to socal.

There is the potential for improved mileage if driving is 90% highway and it's all straight and level, but I went to 30s on my '94 with the 22RE and it wouldn't do better than 18 except on one trip down the US highway from Vegas to Phoenix doing 55 the while way.

Same story as you... 5th gear WOT was my cruise control.

People lie about mileage all the time.
They also are unintentionally misleading because they are not calculating properly.
The Scangauge/Ultragauge are only as accurate as their calibration.
