I just traded my TRDOR for a FX4 supercrew, for a number of reasons.
The day I took possession of my new truck it was snowing. I drove off in approx 1" of fresh snow. The roads were SLICK. I used 2 whl drive all the way home and had no issues starting or stopping. I intentionally stabbed the brakes attempting to induce what I got tired of experiencing with my Taco. Never occured.
Few days later I spoke with my saleman. I had shared with him my concerns over the Taco's ABS system. He told me he scared that shit out of himself in the parking lot. Made a believer out of him.
The Taco is a nightmare in the snow. I'm talking street driving, not off road trails etc.
Now all the lovers are going to say, learn how to drive etc.........................

If you got no taco then get the hell outta here.

I am sure you can drive so I will not say learn how to drive but what you really need to do is learn how to brake.;)

Ya, its fucking weird. No other car ive driven rolls like that. I personally think its due to the ABS not applying enough braking pressure. Ive had other cars out, slammed on the brakes in snow or heavy rain, even activated the abs and had no problem.

We get a lot of rain here. Ive seen accidents happen way too often so im pretty good at keeping my distance and staying under the speed limit. This was in rush hour going about 50km. I was palnning on them going through the yellow and hit the brakes a little harder. I was barly rolling when i hit, abs was still going.

My point is its happened to a lot of people and it is a problem. A lot of the time its driver cause but having brakes that actually worked would have saved me a lot of cash. Abs has gone off a ton of times, even with barley tapping the brakes. For me it also goes off frequently when i hit a speed bump or pothole while braking.

nah, ABS is scary. Although air pressure, speed, tread depth, alignment, and other factors can all decrease the scary factor. My solution was a Disable switch for those scary moments. keep calm and flip the switch, stop, turn it back on and drive away.

Although our winters are not what yours are, we ( Boone/ Banner Elk) do get significantly more snow than the rest of the South. Not trying to compare or start shit, just saying. Probably get scoffed at, but we have had seasons totaling over 80 inches.

look up static and kinetic friction. idk about the tacoma but a car with a good abs system will pulse at such a high frequency it will maximize time at the highest friction coefficient. that is ABS's function along with keeping the car going straight. it will easily slaughter a car in stopping distance that just locks up the tires.

    Sigh

ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces for many drivers; however, on loose surfaces like gravel or snow-covered pavement, ABS can significantly increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle control.[1][2][3]

    yup.

Ok, so I know what the beef is....as I can compare old skool vs new skool ABS

I haz a 99 4runner with abs and it activates in snow, but never feels like
I have no braking at all...it will rattle and pump and sometimes I wish it
would just act like no abs so I could stop...

I hax the Taco and in snow the abs activated and it felt like the
truck was throwing me forward (as in, no effective braking, a bit scarier
    than in the 4runner)

So, my remedy !!!!! and it will work for you too !

I slow the f**k down when I am driving in conditions which could
induce extra slippage in a hard braking situation. SOLVED!

    sigh

Is the stopping distance shorter with ABS?

No! From early commercials, it may have looked like you could stop on a dime. That instantaneous stop is not realistic. When braking on dry or wet roads your stopping distance will be about the same as with conventional brakes.

You should allow for a longer stopping distance with ABS than for conventional brakes when driving on gravel, slush, and snow. This is because the rotating tire will stay on top of this low traction road surface covering, and effectively "float" on this boundary layer.

A non ABS braked vehicle can lock its tires and create a snow plow effect in front of the tires which helps slow the vehicle. These locked tires can often find more traction below this boundary layer.

My ABS works great when I am on hard surfaces, when the roads get slick from snow it is stupid bad. It kicks in way to easily. I have nearly rearended someone because it kicked in when I was going slow (as in under 5mph). knowing this, I stop way farther back than most people ever do and creep forward to make sure I don't slide into people. I need to set a switch up to disable my ABS in snow

Everyone park your truck when it snows. We all need to slow down, 5mph is not slow enough. Hop in your cars and get where you need to because your truck does not have enough guts.

I'll just drive past, flip my switch and continue.
