whats the coldest temp you have started your taco in

I don't think it got below freezing here this year. Texas Gulf coast. It did down to 66F in the house one night.

 

I've rode a snowmobile at -50. That was a very interesting ride!

 

-40 C. Wasn't even plugged in. She hesitated, but still turned over and started.

 

23 degrees, that's when I was in Lake Tahoe though.

For those in the -40 range. Do you have a block and or battery warmer? Being where I go sledding for vacation it does hit them temps once in awhile... I never expected this many responses to this poll thou, kinda neat to see the answers

 

-28C with a -40C windchill.

 

Here in Canada Toyota Tacoma's come with block heaters, you have to pay for them of course. I never plugged mine in all winter and it was okay. On those -30C days it took a bit to get started but it started(no more than 2 cranks). Once the truck warmed up after a few moments it was good to go.

 

Most vehicles sold new here come with both heaters, along with an oil pan heater. Earlier this winter we had a couple weeks of -50, and it gets colder in the low spots. I've started at -56 after a 12 hour shift, but you can bet all the vehicles in the lot had their heaters plugged in. There's really no interest in testing the unplugged theory at those temps, it can quickly become a matter of survival.

Eight years in Anchorage, never plugged in down there, even with no garage.

 

What do you do at work? Do they have power outlets around the parking lot? How frequently are they damaged from people sliding into them when it's icy?

I just can't imagine the logistics of living in that environment.

 

When cold, hands go in pants. That's logistics of Alaska hahaha.

I spent a week up there doing some work on the general aviation airport in February 2001.
Years and years and never any serious incidents, the one day an FAA inspector was in the tower, a pilot radioed in that he was going around because the runway was fouled.
There was a Winnebago rolling down the runway. We were working with a local contractor developing a logic system that would provide railroad type gates where one of the taxiways crossed the road to keep the planes on the taxiways and the tourists on the roadway.

It was cold, but no colder than I encountered in Bishop and Mammoth in '08.

 

Yeah, it comes in spurts up here for us. Weather is anything but predictable being surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and the other being the ocean. December was our coldest month and I think it got down to -25 or so.

The worst part is getting in and having the foam in the seat feel like it's made of stone.

 

Yeah there's outlets in the parking lots. The outlets are atop 4-5" conduit or masonry towers; someone usually winds up needing some body work by the end of winter. They make arctic grade extension cords that are supposed to remain flexible at low temps. They usually have an LED in the end of the cord so you can know the outlet you're using is hot. Good times!

Now if I can figure out how to afford a Tesla, maybe I'll go electric.
I can't plug in at home, but I can plug in at work, and most shopping centers now have plug-in spots.

Worst case if I need a top-up, I don't live far from the Diamond Bar California Air Resources Board palace building and they have a bunch of spots to plug in.

 

My 2nd gen probalby around -25 - -30 celcius for about 3 weeks parked....my 99 was probably 3-4 weeks at -45 celcius it started no problem. Can't beat them as long as the batteries good....no block heater btw

 

around the -40 mark. give or take. even unplugged its started but definately didnt like it. plugged in, no prob.

to the comment above somewhere, all vehicles in alberta for sure, maybe even all of canada now come from factory with block heaters.

and the other comment about parking lot plugs, yes they get damaged, but most times they are mounted on steel beams, posts, or some other elevated means that not gonna easily get wrecked.
