What rpm do you rev to when starting in 1st?

Everybody drives their manuals differently. What I am wondering is what rpm most guys are hitting while starting off. For me, its 1900-2000 with my 4banger. I can do it with much less but I would be driving like a stoned old man releasing the clutch like its made of sponge. What're your start-off habits?

 

I rarely start in second... I feel too bad for my clutch lol. It vibrates a lot when I do.

 

1st gear!!? I just do it by ear. Just wen it sounds good, 1st is only there to get you to 2nd from a dead stop if you have stock gearing and tire size.

But I now have an LS1 and a T56 with 3.90 rear gears so I dont even need 1st gear.

 

1900-2000 rpms? I rarely get over a 1000 or so starting off in 1st on my v6. Even on dads old toyota 22re I don't get much above idle.

 

get it as close to stalling as possible. Less RPM's means a longer clutch life.

 

When I let off the clutch at 2000 the rpm drops to 1100-1200. Its not at 2000 for very long at all. Just a split second. My gearing is stock. I hate first gear on my truck. I wish I could start in 2nd all the time. But my clutch would be gone.

 

Hearing my engine want to stall from really low rpm makes me cringe... feels like I am danaging something

 

All my vehicles have been manual trans and I've never once watched to see what rpm I'm at to start off or change gears, all by ear and feel. Feel the clutch start to catch add some gas and drive off....

 

My clutch also doesn't grab until the pedal is almost all the way out. With the older trucks they grab a lot sooner making it easier to regulate engine speed vs . Movement.

 

I always watch.. guess I'm weird lol!

I use the pat and feel method. Touch it a little while releasing clutch add throttle if necessary

 

For my truck, once it grabs, it grabs. There is only about 2 inches of travel once the clutch grabs. half the time i don't even press the pedal all the way down cause it slips the second you depress it at all. i read a thread saying all oem clutches are like that, but that when you replace with an aftermarket clutch it starts grabbing alot sooner.

 

1st gear? I only use that when I'm towing or starting uphill. Level ground or down hill I start in 2nd then shift to 4th and then 6th. I never watch the tach just go off of feel and no I'm not slipping it to do it. Starting in 1st just throws off my shift pattern got to do a 1st, 3rd then 6th thing.

 

I shift at about 3000-35000, but only because ever gear above second makes a grinding noise below 2000 when im on the gas. Thats totally normal, right?

 

I have the V6 and I only use 1st if the vehicle COMPLETELY is at a stand still. If I'm moving even the slightest I keep it in 2nd.
I agree with the OP shifting too early and having the truck vibrate initially in 2nd makes the driveability horrible but at the same time I don't like rev'ing it up past 2500 rpm because I am just dumpin fuel...

When I drive manual tranny vehicles, I try to keep it below 1000.

 

In my wrangler, if I'm having fun I rev it to about 4500...
