Hey guys so I am kind of a newb wheeler and I cannot wait to make for the MOAB trip. I already have been getting all my stuff ready for the trip. My question to all of you is what trail ratings could a truck such as mine handle. It is a daily driver so I need to not destroy my truck. I know things can happen, but in general what trail ratings do you recommend?

I am making a few trips to badlands indiana so I can actually do some wheeling and get some experience under my belt before this trip. I don't have an additional skids besides the factory ones.

I have a Baja so it has a little lift and I put on a pelfreybilt plate bumper with a winch.

1-4 or 5 on the rating scale of 1-10.. would be conservative to start

stock tire size with some armor, but nothing beefy underneath...you'll be able to do some scraping but you won't want to have too much exposure to things that could damage things underneath..

while you're out there you can play around in the play area at BFE and test to see what you're comfortable with too

Okay that is what I figured. I will be there by wednesday and will be there until Sunday so I will have plenty of time to try the easy stuff first.

i think the main things holding him back would be protection underneath and tire size...

winch takes care of needing a locker when it comes down to it...would be a nice bonus though and would speed things up..

but being a noob i'd stay conservative and work your way up..

fins and things would be a good way to break yourself into moab trails...easy obstacles, very forgiving with harder options along the way to challenge you..

you can take strike ravine into camp as a close to camp option that has optional lines to challenge you.

you should be able to do sevenmile, top of the world and other trails along those difficulties

My truck pretty much met it's match on poison spider/golden spike/gold bar rim. I was on 32's, stock skids, open diffs, and sliders. I had to bypass the golden crack but not much else. So yeah I'd say up to about a 5 rating is good for your truck if not a bit higher.

Would skids or tires(285/75/16) be a better next step?

Yes. You already have the locker which is huge. I'd do skids first then tires. My skids took a beating.

    pretty much

33s and/or little more protection underneath and you'll have no problem with 5s and can get into the 6s...

then going up from there you'd have to make the call depending on how comfortable you are with your truck on the trails..

hard to say based on ratings alone too, because some trails say they're a 6 but depending on truck width, wheel base, trail condition, etc, it can be higher or lower than the rating says..some trails may go based off their hardest obstacle which may have a bypass so it could be much easier, while others can have the same rating but have no bypasses and are harder overall..

but that goes back to my original thought of start with some easier trails to get an idea of what you are comfortable with and go from there...

4/5 are some fun trails and offer less risk to start off with...allows you to enjoy the trail more and not worry the whole time about your truck..

then when you're ready move up and test your limits

For Moab, definitely bigger tires. More tires gives you more clearance so you drag less.

Yea as your truck sits now you can have a LOT of fun.

    id hit trails like

    Seven Mile
    Top of the World
    Fins n Things
    Hells Revenge(has lots of bypasses)
Elephant Hill(bit more technical but totally doable)

you'll have a blast on just those trails and you shouldn't have to change a thing on the truck.

    doesn't mean you can't :p haha
