I really like that sPod, that things nice! Ill have to incorporate that on my next build, hopefully ill be bringing it home tomorrow

 

It'll work in any vehicle. The only item on it that's really Tacoma specific is the mounting bracket and the switch wire harness is designed to use the factory blank locations.

It'd be super easy to re-do the switch wiring harness if it wasn't set up the way you want.

Is this the mount you went with? So you just had to cut a hole in the roof and you ran the wire through your headliner? How do you like your CB radio? I'm trying looking around at different options as I need one in my truck. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to get what you have or just a

Uniden PRO520XL 40-Channel CB Radio with a firestik or something. I only really plan on using it when on trails during meets with other TW members. I'm thinking what you have, as nice as it is, might be a tad bit overkill

 

If you are just planning on using it for trails, I would go the Firestick route. The Wilson 1000 maybe "overkill", but I like his approach to doing everything right the first time. Overkill is underrated IMO, but not all of us can afford it

Wilson 1000's on low trails will not last IMO. I got multiple dents in my roof - would of ripped one of them off by now for sure. BGR lasted all of 5 minutes in my local trails with his roof mounted antenna before it broke off

Moral of the story is ......Each antenna has it's pro's and con's and everyone has different needs. Tailor your mods to your needs with research and common sense and you should be good to go.

My antenna is under my bed rack mounted on my rear bumper and I can still hear someone literally 4 miles away through trees.

You might not be wrong. My philosophy is do it best possible within the application.

I wanted my CB to reach Mars. For CB function, you can't beat using the roof metal as a ground plane. You simply won't find another location on this truck with that much metal in the same place. Bed mounts work well in most pickups because the bed is steel. Not here.

Regardless of what setup you go with, take the radio/antenna to a CB shop prior to install and get them peaked and tuned. It makes a world of difference. And invest in a quality antenna. CBs are 60 year old technology...they're all pretty much the same. The stick they're firing out through is what matters most.

As for trail clearance, I've taken mine under stuff within 10" of the roof without issue. The whip is extremely flexible. Makes a lot of noise up there hitting low branches though.

Word. Be careful. If you get addicted (like me) you're never gonna settle for regular wiring methods ever again.

Hmm. I'm very tempted to do what you did but I think it's overboard for the very little use it will end up seeing. Do those brackets that you mount under your hood and they pop out the side work well? I've seen them mounted to that and the bed rails with the wire ran and grounded to the frame somewhere. I'm not sure on what antenna to get still but I need a removable one as I don't want it on my truck 24/7 where someone can steal it.

 

I agree. I still haven't made a decision if I am going to build this one or not. There are several built trucks around that wouldn't cost much more then doing this one. Decisions decisions

 

Building 'em is more fun, but after spending the last 2.5 years on this thing...I am sorta ready for it to be "done". All that's really left is the winch stuff and dual battery.

 

Shit first time i saw the price of the sPod I did a it costs THAT much for that?!...but after wiring my first minor accesory and with the thought of one day adding more it all makes since to me now. That price doesnt look so bad anymore

Next project will probably be a beater yota build. I like the idea of putting a third gen 4runner on a trailer.
