Thanks for the comments Fellas. I certainly am aware that life is what you make it.

The plan is to go to basic, AIT, come back to college, pass the PT test(easy) and SMP with my ROTC group. I dont plan on competing for active duty right away because the scholarship says that i have to stay in the guard for 4 years as an officer for them before i attempt to apply for active duty. I will hopefully be applying for the FBI by that time as i can do counter intel when i commission as an officer and i've got the connections to get with the intel unit near my college when i get back so my MOS will still be Infantry but i'll be working with the Intel unit.

Thanks fellas. I want to do the best i can do and thats all i can really strive for.

SMP is a great option that pays for school. You are non-deployable, but you still drill with your guard unit.
Just do good in school, keep your GPA high, and prepare for LDAC. It's getting harder and harder to get an active duty slot, if that's what you want.

OP ... if you stay in for 20 years ... you will probably see a war or two (based on the past).

It does work well in the military when you can get a MOS that will make you some money in the civilian world.

Good luck and thank you for your service.

Congrats! I like that you are planning your future now, you will have a better chance of success. I do agree with the guys here that stated to get your job up front and in writing. Take it from an old retired infantryman, the only way I got out of the Infantry was to get out of the Army and join the Navy.

Nice! Just dont let anything get to you in basic. It's all a mind game and its over before you know it. Benning will suck during the summer though. But if youre already planning on switching mos's you might as well do it now. Why do something you dont want to do when you get out?

Thanks for the tip, i've been informed of the mind game, so im just trying to get in even better shape so im good in that department. :0

I want to get the maximum benefits that come with the perks of completing AIT/Basic training rather than split it up into two summers.

I'd rather experience the Infantry life anyway, im going to be an Officer so i figured i'd want to see what the lifestyle would be like.

    Thanks for your service btw!

Congrats! I'm just about to graduate and commission from ROTC. Like others have said, you definitely need to keep your GPA HIGH if you want to get MI as it is a tough branch to get in to.

I would also say that once you get back to school, contract as quick as possible because a lot of schools are getting cuts now.

But good luck with it man. Should be fun!

Thank you for volunteering to serve and protect our freedom. I wish you nothing but the best!

I will also state, please do not trust your recruiter. Used car salesmen all of them... They have positions they need to fill with quotas and will tell you anything to get you to sign. It is sad but true. Stand your ground for what you really want and go in with this all in writing. I did this MANY years ago and got exactly what I wanted out of the Army. My son did not listen and was screwed by the Navy recruiter no matter how many times I told him to be wary.

Regardless, you will have fun, you will learn a lot and you will be a better person because of it. There's nothing wrong with discipline and structure. Remain positive throughout basic and be enthusiastic. You'll have a great time. If I were not this old, I'd do basic again! Damned good training...

They tried to push me into infantry first. I told them "Why? That is EVERYONE'S secondary MOS" then they wanted me in supply. I told them 81E (Now a computerized job in the 20 range of MOS) which was a graphics specialist. I'd done 4 yrs of architectural design through high school. After 2 months of not giving in, I got it in writing that I'd be a US Army Scribbler. :D

You're welcome for the service but I'm not one of the heros. I did serve, but it was all peace time... never left Washington DC. I worked the whole time at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Battle ready but never tested.

Congrats and thank you for your service.

Basic training: be a team player, help your platoon members and others with encouragement and what ever else you can do to make them successful. Goes for the rest of your life. Bad things can happen at the hands of the DI or instructors to those who belittle, ridicule or laugh at fellow 'cruits. That's there job.
