For those of you looking for a cheap "race radio", check out the link below. This is no substitute for a higher quality vehicle mounted radio but this will work if you're going on a group run that is using 2 meter band radios (sooo much better than CB) or if you want to listen in at the races.

$40, hard to beat. Is getting good reviews (for the price point) from people who know what they're doing if you google it. The instruction manual supposedly sucks, so if you're new to HAM radios you will need google to help get you going.

    http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-136-174-400-480-Dual-Band-Transceiver/dp/B009MAKWC0/ref=pd_cp_e_1

I'm going to pick one up so I can hand it to my spotter when they get out to guide me through the rocks or what not.

Probably pointless to chime in because my opinion about things is just as irrelevant as everyone else's but regarding the Recoil video, I'm pretty sure it was funded by Monster. And Monster is a business. They don't exist to promote a sport or a person, they exist to sell energy drinks.

While the vast majority of people already involved in the sport don't get boners from big hucks and all of that, the real point for Monster is that video will reach an audience of energy drinking kids they didn't reach before. BJ said it himself last night, but basically this is Monster's attempt to make an off road version of Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin, Jr. The entire formula of how they've marketed BJ is the same.

To be honest I think BJ's "persona" has become more over the top since the Monster sponsorship. Thats not to say he was a choir boy prior to Monster, but the Monster backing is what started the push for the social media push, the instagramming, etc.

I personally am not mad at the guy for having a rich Dad. As far as I know he didn't pick his Dad. It's easy for me to say that he's spoiled and that he shouldn't be that way, but I'm not willing to say that if I were born to a well off family that I would somehow refuse all of that and choose to claw my way to the top. I don't feel like that's a fair criticism. I am willing to bet at this point that very little of his racing program is funded by his Dad. In my opinion, Monster is and has been pulling the strings for the last few years.

I don't think the dude is a saint and I'm definitely not a fan boy, but I don't hate him the way Matt does. I get Matt's point of view, I just don't feel the same. The few times I've interacted with him personally he's been pleasant and accomodating and I'm sure he's not that way all the time but I think he does some positive things for the sport and community too that he doesnt get much credit for.

Bottom line for me, none of the BJ personal stuff is all that important. So far no one in the sport has made a promotional video on this scale and it's getting exposure that no one else has managed. The team who shot it obviously put a lot of quality work in to it and it shows. Maybe it will spark a bit of an arms race with other energy drink companies. Would be great to see the Red Bull guys, Speed guys, etc invest a little time and energy in to this kind of thing as well and really push the limits to generate some mainstream exposure.

All just my long winded personal opinions, no offense to anyone who sees things differently.

for those who have boxed the frame on their 05+ tacoma, how long does it take to do all the work? i had emailed Tim at DMZ about getting the templates he has, and am on the fence about pulling the trigger and having them shipped, or just waiting and picking them up in June when i pass through california

    **edit**
would any of yal know of, or are "garage fabbers" want to install the box kit when i get out to cali?

Majority of the rock crawling clubs I wheel with all use the Chinese wuoxun hand held and the baofengs because they are very cheap to purchase and work relatively well..they are great for the slow moving trails and work 1000's of times better over a CB radio. But they won't do so well for the faster desert stuff because everyone gets spread out over the route/course just because they can only push out 5watts of power. For the faster stuff you need an actual mobile unit that will push 65-75 watts depending on brand and model and not a walkie talkie. I bought my g/f a cheap Chinese wuoxun HT and so far has done great in the nearly 2 years that we've had it. :cookiemonster:

Is there a cheap way to boost the signal on the cheap handhelds? IE throw An antenna on the roof and keep it plugged in or something lol

Yeah, a roof mounted antenna will get your signal out a bit more. You'll need the right antenna adapter from the HT to the antenna coax but that is easy enough. You can also get a mobile amp to greatly boost power but you might as well get a dedicated mobile unit if going that route

getting an antenna on the roof will help a bit, but most handhelds are max 5W. they make in-line amplifiers but they create tons of noise for anyone listening to that channel.

Yea, I already have a CB installed next to my leg...I don't really want to clutter up the interior with ANOTHER communication device lol. I'lll just get a little handheld and see how it stands up to a Occatillo trip :D

Handhelds are limited mostly due to their power output (5W vs. 60W for a vehicle mounted unit). A high gain antenna mount properly (above the roof of the vehicle) will also help.

A 5/8 wave antenna will out perform a shorter 1/4 wave antenna.

Not much more than a CB with a good antenna.

I wish everyone would just get a 2 meter and be done with CB's lol

I got my Kenwood TM-281a for under $200 with an antenna. I have to shake my head when people spend close to that for a CB with a firestick.
