Hey it looks like my frame is rusting/ warping in front of my rear wheel by the muffler. It's doing it on both sides - looks like where the two separate parts of the frame meet are warping and the stamped layers are beginning to separate. Something to worry about? I'm a second owner and I still owe quite a bit of money...I have about 130k on it and was expecting to get a lot more.

    attached is a pic.

Turns out, because I have a rebuilt title, Toyota won't touch it.
Mine's a pinhole, compared to OP's photo, so hopefully I'll get a few more years out of it.

heres a thought i have, from working with metal 5 days a week, i wonder what grade metal they use, a-588 with rust fast, and flake once paint/coating is gone, a-36, costs more, but will rust, BUT wont flake as much/very little and is a stronger grade... i have a 2012, and so far without crawling under it (which i will soon as it warms up outside) had zero frame rust.... but, makes me think twice about keeping this over 4-5 years before upgrading to a new one

FWIW, I live where we have no snow, and my home is 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

While my 2010 is no where near how these trucks look, and actually looks almost new on the frame but the oem Bilstein shock bodies are rusting, I started to apply corrosion prevention compounds to the frame.

After seeing the OP's frame photos a few months ago, I got under the truck and had a look. Luckily the truck is easy to work on being a prerunner. I used Corr Ban 22 in spray cans and spray the frames exterior and really gave a lot of effert to spray withing the box structure and into the lap joint doublers. In the next few weeks I plan to drop the spare tire, and coat areas I may have missed.

Someone mentioned you would have thought Toyota had learned from their previous mistake. Obviously the frame corrosion is not controlled by paint alone. The corrosion to make the holes starts internally where unless the frame were dipped for an extended time, no protection would be there.

The best treatments to a newer truck is going to be a spray on film protection. Make sure the person that does this coats the box area or places that trap water.

With proper corrosion prevention compounds, they have the ability to creep under the moisture and displace it, then form a protective oil based film for longevity. Regardless this still should be renewed occasionally.

If I had known in 2010 that these frames would have seen these issues, I would have treated the trucks entire underside on day one of ownership.

Personally, I think this may get very ugly for Toyota. Almost as if they are a habitual criminal. If one frame fails from corrosion, with deaths involved, I can not see how Toyota will be able to hide, given the track record of previous models and the photos emerging on the internet.

Very true and all. But that flaking reminds of older a588 plates outside of work. And what I wonder compared to gm,dodge, ford what generation steel does Toyota use? 1gen brand new not recycled, or 2nd, 3rd 4th. From what my supervisor said about recycled steel, yes when it's melted. All impurities should rise to the top and be tossed away. But. What grades of metal where they (kinda like discount gas at the wholesale stores). Just some random thoughts in my head. To the OP. I hope Toyota does you good on this!!!!

The dealer and the corp worked it out, splitting the expense of the parts and the job.

We paid for lower control arms.

It took about 4 days in the shop once the frame and parts were on site.

We took it home tonight and will give it a run out in the coming days.

I'll try to get underneath it for some photos tomorrow.

Ok so I am no metalurgist so maybe this is a dumb question. Why if my boat trailor is galvanized and never rusts, why cant they galvanize our frames? My trailer is certainly larger that my Taco frame.
