I'm in the same boat as the op!!! I wanna change the rear differential fluids, but I don't know what I have. My truck is a 2003 Prerunner Trd with the rear locker.

$14/quart from straight from Amsoil. Not bad, considering Mobil1 synthetic from Oreilly/Advance is $11.

i don't recall using more than 3 qts for my last change for the rear diff. i believe the FSM calls for 2.75 qts. Here is Amsoil's capacities and recommendations:

    http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/VehicleLookupPage.aspx?url2=2003+TOYOTA+TACOMA+8

Edit: Crack the fill plug first and make sure you can remove it before draining the oil from the drain plug so you don't get stranded with an unfillable diff! And go get the drain/fill crush washers from your local Toyota dealer.

Sweet thanks man. I wonder if I should buy the synthetic 80w-90 gear lube or the severe gear 75w-90 my dealership claims that it uses 80w-90. Opinions????

i went with the 75w90 severe gear, personally. i've heard, but cannot confirm, that our lightweight first gen trucks can get some rear chatter with the heavier oil.

My truck is an SR5 Prerunner. I do not have the e-locker, but it will spin both tires on a burnout. I do have the TRD package.

The TRD package came with the E locker, that's what the defining feature of the package was.

If your truck doesn't have an elocker, either someone slapped TRD stickers on it to trick you, or someone removed the e locker (why the hell would someone do that??)

Sometimes with an open differential, both tires will spin, it all depends on the load the truck is under and what the ground surface is.

Take some pictures of your truck for us, most importantly where the TRD decals are, and take a picture of the left hand side of the dash, just to the left of the steering wheel. This is where the "RR DIFF LOCK" button is on a TRD.
