If it meant the difference between getting the both of them out alive, or dying in silence under a bush, 200 feet from the busiest hiking destination in Orange County....I would, in a heartbeat.

Understandable, but he doesn't HAVE to make a decision to find help..

IMO there were better ways to attract help other than leaving an injured person behind to find it yourself. Fire, Pile of rocks on the nearest trail, torn clothing tied to branches, use the phone to signal a chopper, leave one of the phones on a trail if it has juice leave a text stating your whereabouts, break branches leading to your location, make yourself obvious!!

And just like you stated above, with him there, he more than likely brought comfort to a F'd situation... So why leave and make an F'd situation worse? If he's already lost and has tried to find help with no success stay put and use common sense. Help the rescuers help you by leaving clues.

All I'm saying is if you're lost, injured or not, help the rescuers out and make yourself and your location obvious.. This is an unfortunate situation and I hope everyone comes back safely. Everyone can learn from a situation like this..

not really true. IF you wander off the main trail... there's a huge amount of other trails and areas you can get yourself into. there's tin mines in behind the falls you could get hurt in, all kinds of roads heading up into the mountains, etc. my dad has hiked all over that place with the old fire chief who had access to all the locked gates, etc. up there.

Jeez, sounds like another volunteer found Kyndall too. The authorities were responding to a "report" that she had been located and sent a team.

One more shot by KFI/OCFD at the volunteers though.. jerks. This could have easily become a recovery mission (body search) instead of a rescue if it weren't for the massive search assist from the volunteers IMHO.

"Fearing that novice rescuers could end up interfering with the search, officials have discouraged volunteers from joining in.

``Let the rescuers do what they do,'' Capt. Jon Muir of the Orange County Fire Authority told the Los Angeles Times. ``This is what they are trained in... They know the hills. They know everything and they can move very quickly.''
