Wire that's only hot when engine is running?

    I am looking to tap into a wire under the hood that is only hot when the engine is running. I know that the foglight anytime mod comes pretty close, but I do not want the wire hot when I am in accessory mode (first click of the key). I could go prodding around, and will likely test it anyway, but I was just wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head.

    I have had this question asked before from someone a while back. I cannot find and wire that is 12V hot only with engine running. The 12V hot wires are either Key off, key accessory, key on, key cranking.

    The fuse i used is only hot on the second click when turning the key and when the engine is running, not hot on the first click, is that what you are looking for?

    Well there is one I know of... But it is in the cab. Blue wire with a yellow stripe front and center. I would really like to pull the power from under the hood though if I could.

    Much closer to what I am looking for yes :D watcha got for me?

    Well i kinda skimmed through your post and didn't read the under the hood part lol, its in the fuse box behind the coin tray to left of the steering wheel, middle row 2nd one in from the left, i used it to power my switch for my LED light bar that is mounted exactly like yours :D, pictures to make it easier

    A mini fuse tap lol, or add a circuit it might be called, i am a complete wiring newb, i got some great pointers from a member on here

    Interesting. Nice to know that there is a 12V hot with engine running power source. It's not live with just the key in the on position?

    I will make a video of my setup here soon enough, but the one I tapped (blue w/ yellow stripe) is in fact hot with the key in the on position... However, in my struggles to find a suitable wire I believe I have found one. I have the DTRL lights and there is a plug that goes into the flasher box, the one that actually makes the blinker click sound. Pin 10 comes hot about 2 seconds after the truck starts up and is not hot in the on position. It has to be the control for the DTRL, but it seems to be the only thing I could find... :notsure:

    You should be able to get them at any auto parts store for a couple bucks. If you use them, make sure you install them in the correct orientation, especially if you run a heavy load off of them.

    Also, I believe the picture Evan showed is the fuse panel in the dash, not under the hood. I was not able to find one under the hood that does what the OP is asking. I ended up using the A/C fan fuse under the hood since I always have my fan on anyways. Not exactly the best method, but it works.

    Yeah I didn't find what I was looking for either under the hood. I did the foglight anytime while I was under there though lol. I ended up drawing from the panel that is in the cab for this project as well

    Ah, Ok. The OP was talking about a hot wire only when the engine was actually RUNNING, as I understood it, not with it just on. Perhaps I misunderstood him.

    Its not live when the key is in the AAC position (first click) it is live in the on position (second click) so the fuse i used isnt really what the OP was looking for, just thought it might help.

    So is this fuse tap ONLY come on when the engine is RUNNING? I need one that does just that. It is only HOT when the engine in on. NOT when in acc. mode.

    To the original question...could you install a vacuum switch that would close when it sees a vacuum (i.e. when the engine's running)?
