Anyone here have a dock? I'm trying to decide between fixed (on piers) and floating. I think fixed looks better. But, they drain my lake in the winter 4-5' from the normal water level. The cove I live on is shallow, only a few feet of water, so they would be exposed in the winter. That, and it will be a pita to dig piers 36" + in the muck to get them below the frost line. Which brings me to conclude floating is the way to go, even though they don't look as nice. Thoughts?

We have one of those white plastic and aluminum ones in an L-shape that we winch up onto the shore. Super stable, no maintenance, and it doesn't splinter.

i'm thinking 4x16. I want to be able to tie my 12' aluminum boat off to it, and our kayaks so I don't have to pull them out after every use (giggitty)

I looked at them, alum is expensive though. I can build one for far less from PT lumber, and decking. Even if I use composite decking it's still significantly cheaper.

If you do a floating dock are you still thinking two piers? And use those big u-bolt type things so the dock stays in place but can rise or drop with the water levels? Then a ramp going down to it with wheels so it changes pitch when the dock moves up and down, or are you thinking more basic, like let it float and tie a rope or cable to it to secure it

First option. It will change with the water levels Pitch changing ramp, etc..

I'd really like fixed, but I imagine since the water level gets dropped in the winter, the frost would just displace the piers and warp the dock.

Ya you would have to go down until the ground gets solid, then to be safe another 3-4' from there. Probably a deeeeeep hole

It will be at the end of the summer if I understand what's going on with it. The owner is going to sail with us as a last trip.

Its a 70"Turbo sled. Which means when it was "Turboed" They added 10 feet of mast from the original design:burnrubber:The owner was saying that he has had it up past 28knots maybe even past 30 at somepoints downwind. Which is insanely fast for a sailboat (30-35 Mph)

Very true. It could be done with a 12-18" diam piece of pcv. Pound it in, remove soil with post hole digger, pound it in more, post hole digger, pound in, post hole digger...

but that sounds like more effort than it's worth.

I hate post hole diggers. Edit: my shoulders hate post hole diggers. That would be some real rough dirty work, sounds like something i would try lol. I would think the pvc would break pounding it in, even if you put a 2x12 block on top and whack that, maybe not in the soft mucky stuff but once you hit solid ground. Maybe it can be done but you would need to test to see how far down you would need to go. Having a pro do it with their machinery is probably BIG bucks so it might be worth the blood sweat and tears.....and beers

I spent a summer digging post holes for deck piers. Not fun.
