I had no issues buying 2 trucks and a house with 1 credit card I never used. What the hell do I need 2 for now? I got big boy bills. Pretty sure my mortgage and truck payments will be enough. I also don't use scum bag insurance that uses biased data like a credit report to determine my rates.

About 15% of your FICO score is determined by your length of your credit history, paying off a card and closing the account is not a good move. About 30% of your FICO score is determined by your credit utilization rate, 25% and lower is better. If you have 3 cards with a $3000 limit on each & have $1000 balance on each card your utilizing 33%. If you take advantage of a 0% balance transfer on one card and close out the other, you've just bumped your utilization to 50% Stay away from local merchant financing (furniture store) they are lower-tier loans & seen as last resort loans. Having a nice mix of credit is key. So your mortgage, Tacoma loan & a credit card will keep you on top of the 'merican credit totem pole :D

yes and no. to keep credit up high, you should carry a balance for a couple months, even just 100, it shows ability to handle debt. and that is where the real scores, fico, come to play. but doing it that way ant is still good, but not the most effective way to raise credit

my fico is like 738 i believe. being a single homeowner i have learned quite a bit about credit and building it and maintaining it.

it's not bad but your not showing you can stay under that 25% balance of revolving credit.

*rephrase that since your staying under it by staying at zero. you should carry it for a bit paying at least the minimum. be careful on high credit limits & the # of revolving credit accounts when trying to get a mortgage. having 100k in revolving available credit even with zero balance is a red flag for lenders.

essentially, what everyone is saying, is using credit yields better credit when used properly and is not defaulted on.

Ehhh, no don't carry a balance if you don't have to. Credit companies look at average balance. If you pay off your credit card bill of say $1000 per month you still have an average balance of $500-$1000. And as long as you pay what is required all the time you're all set. Paying off your credit card bill every month is never a bad thing.

Get your credit info from here once a year: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
That is the official free annual credit report site from the government. I will usually pay one of them to get my score, which gives you a little insight on what helps/hurts your score.

Basically you want to have as much credit available to you as possible with as little debt incurred as possible, but still some debt so you can show you pay it off. And always pay on time. And have a variety of debt, but not too much variety. Yeah, it's insane, like trying to please a woman.

So if you have a credit card you never use, but has a high limit and no annual fees, just cut it up and leave the account open, you'll gain credit for it. If you have a bunch of $500-$1000 limit credit card you don't use, close them. Unless you don't have many long standing accounts, then keep one open that you've had a while to show good history.

I'm kinda drunk right now, and feel like I'm rambling, so take all that with a grain of salt.
