After a great 13 years, I lost my best freind a few weeks ago, and thought this would be a nice place for her to be remembered. Hope y'all don't mind the pup pics :)

ok... so i started shopping around for a used Canon 7D to designate for desert races due to the fast shoot mode and weather sealing...

i noticed that a number of local ads on Craigslist were averaging between $1,000 to $1,400...

so, on a whim, i hit up my pro sales rep at Samys Camera and ended up buying one brand new with a grip...

    not bad for $1,400...

any 7D shooters in here have any settings preferences they would like to share?

You definitely wont need a grip, you should send it to me :D

Get some big CF cards, RAW files are pretty big, and with 8fps it fills up faster than you expect :anonymous:

I like using the AF point groups or point expansion.

Browse through the custom functions. This opens up many doors with the 7D, if you didnt already know that.

The AF was way to fast for me when doing wildlife, so i slowed down the speed of the AF, so it didnt focus on trees or branches that got in the way. I would recommend you do this so it doest change focus from the car/truck to the dust.

Use the rear AF focus button if you dont already.

Also in the Custom functions you can set the thumb joystick thing to change AF points without having the press the AF point selection button, i really like that.

If you switch from landscape to portrait a lot there is a function that will let you preset different AF points for landscape and portrait shooting, which is also very useful. So if you are shooting landscape using the far left AF point, when you filp to portrait you can make it switch automatically to a different point or any of the other AF settings.

Change silent shooting mode to mode 1. In any other mode you dont get the full 8fps IIRC

It will probably take a few shoots to fine tune your camera to your liking because of the amount of settings.

When using high ISO's, shoot to the right, i.e. over expose and then bring it down in PP. this will give you better noise handling.

I hope what i wrote makes sense, ive had a long day lol. If you have any more questions PM me or post em up here, id be more than happy to help. With your past experience though i doubt youll have any lol.

If i remember anything else later Ill post it up. Hope i was of some assistance. And enjoy your new camera!

Later on Ill grab my camera and tell you exactly where each of the custom functions are.

thanks for the tips... my 5Dmk1 and mk2 don't have those focus speed settings so that threw me off a bit...

i need to sit down with it still and look through that focus group and expansion stuff too...

and good info on the silent mode function... i had no idea what impact the settings would have on burst rate...
