Are you talking about the 70 year old guy from Japan? I'm 90% sure Horse Steeplechase isn't an Olympic event LOL The thing he did is called 3 Day Eventing. Consists of dressage, cross country jumping, and show jumping. :D

    Definition of an athlete:
A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.

    Definition of a sport:
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others

Stock Car Racing is an acitivity involving physical exertion and skill, so there you have your sport. NASCAR drivers are proficient at their sport, therefore, they are athletes. IMO any activity that not just any Joe Schmo off the street can pick up and excel at is a sport. Cheerleading is a sport in my eyes as well. Any one of you who says you can go hop in a stock car and race with the best, by all means go do it. Sure, NASCAR drivers may not be as fit as Ray Lewis or a Supercross racer, but sitting in a car for sometimes 600 miles of racing in the middle of the summer alongside 42 other drivers takes both mental and physical stamina.

Well I guess since it doesn't take any skill to race a vehicle then why aren't you out there racing making as much money as they do?

With modern racing, it's the driver (and crew)... not the car.

Vehicles are power-limited and specifications make them pretty much cookie-cutter. They aren't as identical as the IROC series cars, and the whole point of IROC was to make it 100% about the driver... but even in NASCAR, it's more about the driver than the car.
There are no "shitty cars" on the track. Every car out there is capable of winning.

This has obviously been answered 10x over by now, but...

Motorsports is very broad, Ranging from Nascar to motorcross. You can't just hop onto a sled and do flips with it, It takes agility and strength. In Nascar (hur hur anyone can drive 250 laps in an oval) you need endurance and many other things. I don't feel like typing a page

In defense of NASCAR.... There's a big difference driving continuously for 500 miles at 70mph and driving continuously for 500 miles at 180-200mph

Good clip, and it reminds me that comparing NASCAR fans' fitness level to NASCAR drivers is like comparing NFL fans' fitness level to NFL players.
