Thanks for the thread. I definitely need to do this... I have 120k and it's never been done.

And I live in south Louisiana and have driven through high flood water on numerous occasions.

    $30

I paid $22.67 for all crush gaskets including the 2 for a 6 speed manual which is the same part number for the T-Case along with the union & breather plug for the rear diff mod. Not sure where that $30 price came from for the 6 gaskets he bought. Granted this was posted in 2011, I just bought all this about 2 weeks ago. Price for the gaskets have gone up a few pennies at most. You can see current price on my invoice.

So what is some good brands of gear oils is everyone using? Is Mobil any good for diffs an transfer case I used the motor oil before its great I thought about using amsoil but its pricey an with a 30k change interval I actually have mobil one in my front diff since I did my front diff bearing at 25k

So in anticipation of servicing my diffs and TC, I've been rolling around on the creeper the past two days bathing each bolt in PB Blaster. Any other suggestions for getting these bolts out? Once they are out has anyone put anti seize on the threads to keep this from happening again? I live in the shittiest part of the country for rust and pretty much it's a constant battle to keep it in check.

Just a bunch of old crap
Just did my axles front and rear, and the transfer case change for the first time after 151,000 miles

Everything went like a charm thanks to this and the rear diff write-ups. Drain and fill plugs came right out like a charm (luckily I live in AZ and we don't rust much here). Fluids were all actually pretty clear considering their age, and the magnet on the front diff only had a little bit of metal on it. Had all 3 done in an hour and back on the road. She rolls smooth.

I got every bolt out, including the skid plate bolts that protect the front diff/trans. It only took a week of squirting PB Blaster on the bolts and letting it soak. I'll be liberally applying the anti seize to each bolt to prevent this from happening again!

I ended up rounding three of the six corners off my rear diff fill plug. It's still usable, but I'd rather have six unrounded corners for the next service instead of finding myself rounding it off entirely.

Anyone have any idea if each rear diff plug is the same across the spectrum of 2nd gen Tacoma's? Or am I at the mercy of the parts guy who may get me the wrong size because he clicked the wrong part number?

If you're going to use synthetic, why stick to the 30k interval? I just changed all of my cases w/Amsoil and they recommend 100k mile interval for normal duty, 50k for severe duty. $12.80/qt from my local Amsoil guy, cheaper than Mobil1 I believe. And better viscosity specs.

Forgive me, I'm an Amsoil fanboy and constantly shilling it. I bet Amsoil even wins the stench index. :)

Anyway, thanks for the writeup, OP. Seeing threads like this gets my ass moving to do these things. The drive train is soooooo much quieter now with the synthetic in it. And I know for sure it will be better this winter. One winter on the dino from the factory was enough.

I have a question about the anti-seize. When you use this do you still use the same torque specs? I was kinda confused about this. I may be wrong but I thought I read on the spark plug how to that the torque settings were different for those with/without anti-seize? Just curious if the differentials and TC are the same way also.
