Treadmill has no impact on an airplane. Airspeed is all that matters. Ground speed is a non-factor. Plane moving in one direction with sufficient airspeed to take off for it's type and that puppy is flying no matter what direction or speed the ground under the wheels is going.

Once again.... the wheels do nothing to impart air or ground speed , they freewheel.....like the front wheels of a prerunner, unless brakes are used.

The real thing they never get to is what if the wheels were locked on the conveyer... still easy, the plane can only take off once it exceeds stall speed.

if the conveyer kept rotating, eventually a 747 could, possibly be pulled down a runway. It would take off if it locked the brakes on the conveyer... conveyer got it up beyond stall speed, the conveyer would just be an inefficient set of wheels .

The conveyer is like the trolls magnet.

If the wings and the fuselage go the same speed - It sucks anyways, so who cares??

Ok, what happens when a chopper w/wheels is at full power while being towed on a tarp-treadmill?

    Darn.. still flies..

Awesomeness happens....Really it happens anytime a helicopter does anything - but even more so on a tarp towed by a Tundra.

Starts behaving like a gyro copter?

Actually helicopters don't fly...they're so butt-ugly the earth rejects them!

This thread is great. Was looking for a blower motor issue and found this one. ;)

As previously mentioned, a some what steady-state, relative airflow over a properly cambered airfoil WILL generate a differential in pressure above and below the wing resulting in lift regardless and totally independent from wheel speed. (dude named Bernoulli came up with a principle related to this)

Doesn't matter the type of propulsion......ie. push prop, pull prop, turbine, etc. as long as you have a force which accelerates an airfoil against a relatively smooth, non-aerodynamically turbulent airflow (ie. icing or wind shear) then a lift vector is generated which will, at the right speed (and/or angle of attack) overcome the gravitational forces acting on that airfoil. And off we go...........

Wheels do nothing more than spin faster on a tarp being pulled by the truck......look at em go! ;) Now if they hit their critical speed and fall off, it opens up all kind of fun possibilities to ponder.

As mentioned earlier being that the wheels have nothing to do with actual usable propulsion as it relates to eventually generating lift, they will simply spin up to a faster overall speed with no real penalty acting against the generation of lift. (again until they fall off, which becomes a tremendous determent to the generation of lift. ) Lol ;)

So if a wheel transducer shows a wheel speed spinning up to say 100kts on a normal takeoff at the airfoil's normal rotational speed, then the plane in the test would show a much higher wheel speed at the SAME aircraft rotational speed. You could technically run the numbers based on the trucks speed to find out the additional wheel speed needed to hit the rotational speed of the airfoil. Of course this would be difficult to calculate as the speed of the truck is accelerating and therefor adds a high degree of variability vs. a constant rate which would be easier (for me at least) to calculate.

Time for a scotch- (and to fix my blower motor)

aerodynamics, aquadynamics....it's all relatively similar. The real question is WHY are you on TW during class? haha, pay attention so you can get a good job and afford taco mods later on! ;)
