My 08 4 cyl ticks also at idle. Has anyone on the forum actually figured out what the noise is? I know it's normal, so I'm not concerned, but I am curious.

Now I'm not sure with the 4 cyl but with the V6 I would think it is something to do with the VVTI I know a lot of vehicals that employ this type of technology have a Tick that normaly come out of a solinoid. Soliniods Tick its what they do:D.

I have heard all kinds of reasons...I am not sure anyone really knows. There are plenty of theories in other threads. My 09 4.0 has a slight tick to it...not bad as I am used to it now.

    Too few to list.
There are many things that tick inside the engine bay. It's all normal unless it's way too loud. After a while of having your truck, you'd know what is normal and what isn't.

It's because they are a chain driven motor meaning they don't have a timing belt, but a metal timing chain. It's perfectly normal.

You may be right in this case, but my 2007 Honda Civic 1.8 is chain driven and it doesn't tick.

That's funny because I had an 07 SI which has the 2.0 and it was chain driven and it ticked! I didn't know what was louder, the engine or the injectors!

When the hood is up I can hear the injectors loud and clear, but the engine is silky smooth and quiet. Until I read the complaints on this forum, I thought the tick noise in my Tacoma was the injectors. Then I realized it only made the noise after it was warmed up at idle.

I've never listened to a Honda K20 motor so I can't compare noise levels with the 1.8, but I do know the 1.8 is a newer design so maybe they designed it to be quieter. The K20 also has 57 more horsepower and revs higher. Then again I just turned 42 so maybe my hearing is going.

All of the vehicles I have owned that were chain driven ticked at some point. I had a 2003 Grand Am 2.2L (worthless EcoTech engine) that ticked, a 2003 Nissan Xterra 3.3L (gutless sob) that ticked, my wife's 2004 Corolla 1.8 ticks and my 2006 Tacoma 4.0 ticks.
At some point in the life of a chain driven engine, there is a very good chance it will start ticking.

Nissan 3.3 engines have timing belts, but I believe their new V6 engines are chain driven (4.0, 3.5, 3.7, etc..)

The VG33 that was found in my Xterra was a chain driven motor.
