I chuckled a little when I saw in the 2nd gen taco section

 

My 1984 Camaro with a 305 could get over 20mpg highway, pretty close to 20 if not 20 flat in the city. It was basically stock..I believe it was chipped but never confirmed that. I'll take it especially since it was the last year of the 4 barrel carb on that engine.

 

I could get 21 to 23 mpg in my '07 F-150 Supercrew with the 5.4L motor. That truck weighed in a 5186lbs. That was sustained freeway driving at 2000-rpms or less. City driving or higher rpms and the mpg plummeted to 13mpg or even less. My '09 Access cab with the TRD-sport package weighs about 4190lbs. If I'm very careful I can get maybe 20mpg during sustained freeway driving (with city mileage in the 15 to 17 mpg range.) I'm sure that the difference is gearing, weight, power to weight ratio, tire/wheel size as well as other factors.

My 2006 Chevy Colorado (bought new) would never get about 18 city..barely 20 highway. Granted it was a 4 wheel drive, had the 4 banger, was a regular cab. I traded it for my '10 Tacoma (5 lug, 4 banger, 2 wheel) and it gets 21 city 24-25 hwy. Waiting for the summer fuel so I can see what it can really do

 

From what I know about the new rams is that when driving at higher speeds, the suspension drops to a lower height and can shut off the air that can go into the engine compartment so that air will be forced to go under or over the truck. Remember, thats at highway speeds. The trucks are going to still get horrible mileage in town. It will be even worse than the Taco's. Rams commercials only talk about the 21mpg highway and say nothing about in city mpg.

The F150's that have the eco boost have a V6 with a turbo and gets 24 highway and about I think 16 in town. Remember, it has a V6 instead of a V8, so it's going to get way better mileage than the ram 1500's intown.

GM just lies! Enough said about them.

The heavy duty trucks get the good mileage because of the diesel engine. Diesel does about 20% better in mpg versus regular gas.

Also, some people get modified chips to improve performance and mpg. I have a family friend with a ram 3500 dually that gets 20mpg highway and thats because he has a modified chip.

The Taco is due for a major over haul in 2015. I am sure that performance and or mpg will be apart of that.

Up until late, I was getting 18.5 in city and between 20-22 highway. Something has changed and I have dropped 1mpg on both highway and in the city.

 

OH that's right. I had a chip programmer. And intake/exhaust. Maybe that had something to do with it.

 

CAFE ratings... combined average fuel economy. The feds have it set where the fuel economies ARE going up, even on trucks.
It means constantly reading what is going on to keep up, if you want of course.
An old 351 ford I had was 210 hp , now they have a 3.5 with 360 or so. I was napping on that one last year or 2.

 

Reminds me of something I just said the other day..My Tacoma is only about 10hp off from my 84 Camaro with the V8.

 

those 72-86 cars n trucks, I think everyone here who hasn't read up on the epa emissions and such ... then drive an old 120 hp v-8 gutted and robbed of its glory, should. They might have a new appreciation of what we drive now.

 

I started off with a 79 Ford Mustang (first year of the Fox). That 4 banger could barely make it up the hill to high school, I had a teacher say something to me about getting stuck behind me once

Most 4 bangers were well under 100 ponies then, even when fuel injection became the thing.

My 77 Chevy Malibu was the worst. Thing was close to 5000 pounds and if people think parking a truck is bad then this blows it away, the joke is you don't park my car you dock it. Had the inline 6 that would run forever but it sucked gas so badly and couldn't even get out of its own way, woulda been better mileage from a 350.

 

I've had quite a few new V8 powered full size pickups as rentals through work. Sure, on the instant economy gauge Ive seen 20-25MPG with the cruise on. Then I hit a hill, and it dropped to 8 as soon at the torque converter went out of lock up....

The best AVERAGE, OVERALL, TOTAL, whatever... Econ for a any full size 1/2 ton with a V8 I saw was with a new F150 at 15.5mpg.

I used to have 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with the 318... With a mix of city & Highway, a solid 14 mpg average.

Averages for my Taco (2012DCLB4x4)... All highway: 19-20, Hwy & Street: 17-18, Offroad: 16, Towing a 2500lb trailer: 10-12

Can't really complain about the Taco, and my last daily driver was a 2002 SVT Focus....

 

1. Some of you are really bitter that the newer full size trucks get better gas mileage than the Tacoma.

2. Some of you are comparing old ass fullsize trucks to the new ones that are capable of 20mpg+

Yes, you could play with things like that all the time. However I do not think she was trying to do anything to intentionally deceive you. I have worked for GM for over 20 years, and some of the newer trucks I have seen are quite capable of averaging 20+ MPG. I could care less if anyone agrees with me or believes me of course, because I have worked on these trucks for years, and I know what they are capable of. That being said, the largest portion of getting good MPG is driving. If you heavy foot it all the time, of course you will not get good mileage. Drive a truck reasonably without slamming on the gas every time you want to accelerate and you will see a marked improvement. Of course almost nobody drives that way. But saying that a truck is not capable of doing it is far different that saying the average driver does not drive in a manner that brings out that improved mileage.

Another thing to consider is mileage is realistically based on power-to-weight ratio. A vehicle with a higher power to weight ratio is capable of better fuel economy than one who has a lower power-to-weight ratio. Plain physics there!

First bolded statement: I do not think she was intentionally trying to deceive anyone. You are calling her out as a liar by the way you are stating that. Quite unfair.

Second bolded statement: You can say it again and again until you are blue in the face. That does not make it a fact. I have owned several full sized trucks in my life, and some have had bad mileage, while others have been a V8 with 20+.

I dont think that even counts at all, I drove in A BMW going downhill on a summit coasting it says it was getting 130 mpg as soon as you hit the gas it drops back down to 21 mpg in the car

We can discuss old to new, but you left out the fact that we compared NEW to NEW ALSO, you're so bitter you conveniently leave out the complete story, and tell the half you want, who is bitter? you guess.

btw give the name of someone who is bitter the Tacoma doesn't get 21mpg like a ford/ dodge etc. discussed, don't cowardly not name them if you want to make vague/false accusations.
