Tire and MPG question

For the guys who upgraded from stock 245/75/16 to 265/75/16, how much of a hit did your mpg take?

I know that tire weight is a big factor, but how much mpg can i expect to lose going from 245 to 265s (32lbs/tire to 45lbs/tire)?

 

Sounds like you are going to a load range e tire. What brand tire are you going to?

 

i'm looking at the toyo open country at 2......i commute 30 miles a day and want to know how much mpg i can expect to lose, so it's a big part of my decision on what tire i want to get...i want a more aggressive AT tire but not take to big of a hit in MPG

 

This tire in the p rating is only 41 lbs so you will be fine

Of course if you go with an lt or load range e it will be heavier

If your worried about weight you can also look at the cooper at3 which also comes w a treadwear warranty and is only 38lbs

I run this tire went with this due to the weight and treadwear warranty.

I would go with the p rated version and you shouldn't loose much at all

 

yeah i'm torn between the toyo at 2 P and LT....P is 41 lbs and LT is 45 lbs...apparently the P's don't look as aggressive as the LT's

 

sounds like you do almost all highway driving anyways.

Just picked up a set of A/T 2 a few weeks ago so far I'm very happy with them. they are quiet on the hwy and only noticed a small decrease in Mpg but I went from 265/75 to a 285/75R16 LT.

 

what was the weight increase from the 265s to 285s?

245 to 265 will cost you 1 or 2 mpg. My 265x75R16 are 11 lbs heavier than my 245x75R16 and I lost 2 mpg. I just switched back to the lighter tires since I do mostly highway.

I went from stock 265/75/16 Dunlops on steel wheels, to 265/70/17 Hankook Dynapros (P) onto Toyota alloys on my 2013 4 cly. MT 4X4. So far (haven't been through a full tank yet) it seems like a good 3-4 mpg hit. Truck is quite sluggish up hills and on mountain roads... but, again, it's a 4 cyl and was a bit sluggish to begin with. If it were my daily driver, I would certainly return it to a 245 tire size (not the Dunlops).

 

I didn't even take a hit like that going to 285/65r18

 

I lost 2 mpg.

 

Yeah, probably has more to do with my 4 cyl. and the drive up to my mountain cabin... doubt it would be as bad with a regular commute.
