i have been looking for a topper for my truck since i bought it in october. I can't get myself to pay full price for a new one. I've only found used ones for the long box but can't find any for the short box. Today i found a leer xr thats white and he said he would take $800 for the cap with the roof rack accessories, and a bed mat. the other thing is it isnt the right color and its 4 hours away and would be close to $90 in gas. I have a friend that would paint it so i would just have to pay for the supplys. So i was wondering what people thought if it is a good deal or if its to much with all the extra costs, thanks

paid about 1k for my long bed leer with a yakima rack. they're hard to find, so it's probably worth it, but I can't comment on the paint thing. The leers fit great and look awesome.

My 100XQ was $1900 new. I'm very happy with the fit 'n finish and would recommend a Leer to a good friend.

I'd offer the guy $700 and see what he says.

Has that thing already been painted once? The decal on the rear is missing and it doesn't look like there's any residue from there the glue would have been holding it in place.

IMO, that's too much to pay for a used shell that you'll have to dump more money into painting later on. By the time you get that painted, you'll be at the cost of a low end new LEER shell, color matched to your truck. I bought my ARE MX Series shell used for $700 and was lucky enough that it was the correct color for my truck.

I love my leer although I'm not incredibly impressed with the latches. what color is your truck? I personally think the mismatch can look pretty good.

For the topper and the bed mat, $800 isn't a bad deal in my opinion. The fact that you'd have to sink a couple hundred bucks in fuel to pick it up and then get it painted to match your truck is where I think it might not be a great deal for you. All in all, you'll be at $1,100 before you get it mounted on your truck which isn't anything special. It's still cheaper than new, but not a smoking deal and you'll have a lot of work to remove all the windows and roof rails to paint it and reinstall everything.

Tough call. But hey, what if you end up becoming best friends with someone with a paint booth next week?

I just gave away via Craigslist a short box green topper. It had a small broken window but I didn't get much action on it even though it was free. BTW, I also live in WI so you missed out on this one at no cost.

i would do it man, sounds like you got a pretty good deal and with a buddy painting it for you it should be well worth the money. Look at it this way you are getting a bed mat (90 bucks shipped from trdparts4u.com) roof rack (not sure but probably more than 100) and a top i'd say its a hell of a deal.

My experience with a white shell is the bed stays cooler on hot days. I had a white Leer on my '97 blue Taco, and it looked ok. I had a black F150 company truck when we lived in AZ, and my boss told me to put a tonneau on it. I put a white one on it, and boy was he pissed off. Told me "It looks like a skunk now!" I told him no f'ing way I'm gonna put a black tonneau on the truck in Arizona. Even with the white tonneau it was like opening up an oven.

I say go for it and keep it white. Does the guy have the mounting hardware for the bed rails? How does the D ring seals look for where it seals to the bed?

He said he had all the mounting hardware and I'm not sure how the seals look but I'm going to look at it this weekend to see if it looks good, the guy made it sound like it was only a few years old. And I think I would paint it green because I live in Wisconsin and we don't get to hot of summers but ill see what it would look like on my truck white

So I bought the topper for $800, it wasn't a steal for it but it is still cheaper than new. My next question is how to hook up the third brake light and dome light. If someone else with a topper could please post a picture of where the wires run would be greatly appreciated. I will post pictures later of what the topper looks like if I leave it white but I'm probably going to paint it.
