New tire questions?

I have BFG T/A rugged terain 275/70/16 and am looking into getting some Toyo open country M/Ts 285/70/16.
In the tire size calculator it doesnt look to much bigger than the size of the BFGs, i am all stock suspension and wanna stuff these M/Ts under my 07 DCSB so i guess my question is will it be rubbing like crazy or will i be able to trim the majority of the plastic in the wheel wells and be chill with out a cab mount chop?

They equal out to like 32.6"s right? Without a lift you will def rub and will most likely hit your UCA's without wheel spacers. You will need to lift for those to fit.

 

do you mean 285/75/16 or 285/70/17? both are around 32.6" to 33" depending on mfg. they will rub without a lift. I run 275/70/17 in a load range C to keep weight down and still be able to run with stock width wheels. typically lose about 1-1.5 mpg with a heavy tire with a load range d and e.

If your using stock wheels, check the space between the tire and the upper control arm. You'll see there isn't much clearance for a much wider tire on stock wheels. Probably will rub the UCA.

 

i was also checking out the 265/75/16 of the toyos M/Ts they are a tad smaller in width than the BFGs but also a little taller than the BFGs.
but with the smaller width wouldn't i get away with not rubbing the UCA? and just trimming up the plastic in the wheel well?

 

You can run that size with no trimming at all. They won't rub on anything with the correct amount of caster in the alignment.

 

Therefore when scouping thoes 265/75/16 M/Ts, id need an alignment and to align the caster correctly?

 

Yes. It's a good idea to get an alignment whenever you get new tires anyway. Caster should be around 2.6-3 degrees with an aggressive tire like that. Camber should be 0 and toe 0.

 

These are a pretty safe size. You could put them on and test it. Full lock left and right and see if it rubs while tire is moving. You may be alright. The only thing that I would think that might rub is if those tires have big side nobs sticking out on them. If you haven't had an alignment in a while you will probably want to get one anyway to help save the life of your new tires.

 

The reason there is any issue is because the factory wheels have something like 30mm offset, which brings the tire itself closer to the frame of the truck. If you are on wheels that have 0mm or lower, then it pushes the tire away from the frame giving you more clearance.

tomorrow I'm getting them thrown on and getting them balanced and my truck aligned so we'll see how they fit

 

Toyo MT's are the best! Not the longest wearing due to a soft compound, but they're pretty quiet for an MT and they look as good as anything. Rotate every 3K and they'll last a bit longer.

 

Thats what i have heard that they are preatty quiet thats one of the things i liked
Also yeah i heard they wont last as long but im sure they will keep up with my A/T BFG's i had on before, they were practicaly bald after 20,000 miles
and dont quote me on this but they were suposed to last 50,000+ with proper rotating but that wasnt the case..

 

I was getting about 30K out of 35x12.50x17 Load Range E, on a HD Ram. They're stout tires. You made a very good decision. Just do your best to rotate often.

 

Forsure will doo! i do my own matenence and oil changes an stuff so they will be rotated at 3k
