Ok, so these will work perfectly fine in a '08 Tacoma Sport package, 2WD, Auto tranny??

And, these gears came factory installed from a 2nd gen, V-6 Tacoma??

Would there be any other parts needed to make them drop right into my 08 sport, 2WD rear??

    Thanks

These came out of a 1st gen V6 Tacoma 5 Speed. They came with the 4.10's out of an 8.4 Diff (NON E-Locker)

They are posted here because they can be swapped to a 2 gen Taco. If you have questions look for a member called Archido, he installed the 4.10's on his tacoma.

Incorrect. That's the new FJ rear end that started with the 2010s.

Tacomas and pre-2010 FJs have 8" diffs, e-locked or not.

If you have an e-locker, its an 8". If you do not have an e-locker, its an 8.4". They will not both work with each other. The carriers are different

    Read very carefully:

All 2gen Tacoma differentials have an 8 inch ring gear.

There are other parts of the differential assemblies that are different. But ring gear size is not one of them. This "8 inch" vs "8.4 inch" shit is a misnomer which just gets propagated on here over and over.

    Correct. Correct. Correct..

The 8.4" term only exists to make life more complicated. It's other parts/bolt patterns that will not align in the Factory E-Locker vs. Non E- Lockered rears.

Amazed these haven't sold by now. Only source for 4.10 Gears is OEM Toyota.

    http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

    "All 2wd and 4wd T100's, '00-06 Tundra's, and ?? Sequoia's use a newer/stronger 8" 2-pinion diff. Tacoma 4x4's and Tacoma PreRunner's that don't come with the electric locker (aka "non-TRD), as well as V6 Tacoma 4x2's also came with this diff.
This diff commonly and mistakenly called an 8.4" or 8.25" diff, possibly to imply its extra strength. The ring gear actually measures 8". The extra strength of this diff comes from the bearing cap/truss and large diameter pinion gear shaft."

There are two main fitment issues for these gears:

    - In 2gen tacos, the front diffs have a case break...one carrier is for 3.73 and down, another is for 4.10 and up. If you have a 3.73 geared truck, you will need the appropriate front diff carrier to use these gears in your front differential.

    - The "late model V6" diff, commonly called the "8.4", has a carrier/ring gear with 12 ring gear bolts. Most other Toyota rear diffs have carriers/ring gears with 10. For this reason, these gears won't swap into much other than an "8.4" rear end.

Edit: Looking at the picture in the OP, it looks like one ring gear is smaller than the other. OP, what year truck did these gears come out of? 04 and newer tacos use an 8" front diff, 03 and older use a 7.5" front diff. If that's a 7.5" front R + P, moving this thread to 1st gen marketplace makes much more sense.

    An interesting question.

I am tempted to say yes because both diffs are supposedly "8.4"s.

The Tacoma FSM only lists rear diffs as "with" and "without" differential lock. This leads me to assume (you know what happens) that 5 lugs and 6 lugs use the same open rear end.

I'm going to give Carl at JTs Differentials a call tomorrow..

I kind of have to concur, that 2WD and 4WD open diffs should be interchangeable..

It's definitely going to be an expensive mistake if the gear does not fit.

Perhaps search for part # interchangeability amongst other models of Toyotas? If it is used in another application other than T100/Tundra/Tacoma than it would be a safe bet that it would not be compatible.
