Thought I'd share the good word!

I recently had an issue with my new Kenwood 5120 not communicating with my iPod cable. It ended up being a software version issue. Looks like modern technology has a way of troubleshooting their products when known issues arise. My deck had 3 updates since it was released.

So please everyone, do yourself a favor and check with your manufacture to make sure your deck/head unit is completely updated to the most current version. My deck went from version 1.5.0 to version 2.4.0

Just so everyone has a reference point, here are the fixes that the update corrected. There were some major updates to the deck and it's quite a bit...

•Supports the connection of iPod with KCA-iP301V
•Corrected the defect caused at the time of Navigation startup (only for DNX model)
•Corrected the defect of SIRIUS Category display (only for North America models)[IMG](2008.09.24)
•Corrected the defect caused by connecting the satellite radio receiver to KCA-BT200. (Only for USA)
•Corrected the defect caused by playing a WMA file.
•Corrected the defect of disharmony of clock display between the 12-hour and 24-hour format. (Only for models with 24-hour clock display format)[IMG](2008.04.11)
•Bluetooth Hands Free Unit Control function
•Scan and Random playback function of USB device
•Scrolls the list and makes a selection by front panel knob
    •Slide show(JPEG) function
•MPEG1 and MPEG2 file playback function of USB device
    •DivX ID display
•HD Radio Unit (KTC-HR200) Control function (Only for USA)

For the Kenwood, yes, you download a program and burn it to a CD, you simply then pop it in and it works all on it's own, no need to prompt or even push play... This is a serious must do for anything that has multiple functions.

From your manufacturer's website, look under support or something close to that, I can only speak for the Kenwood I have, it was under their support tab and I found the updates I needed. There's also Google....

I don't particularly have Kenwood as my favorite, but at $399, I loved it! I have found Eclipse to be good (although I heard they sold it and it's no longer premium quality), I had the AVP7000 as my last head unit. I've owned a Pioneer in my 80 series Land Cruiser and liked it a lot. I started with Alpine back in the day but didn't like their current navigation decks. I think you'll find varying opinions on most stuff, but do your homework, read reviews and get feedback, that's what I did and am currently very happy with my set up... Best of luck in your search.

i chose the kenwood because the built in GPS is by garmin...

also you can find out what version of the software you have by going into your setup on the heat unit and scrolling to the second page and there is a tab that reads software version or hardware or something like that, its at the bottom of the second page in the set up function

You're supposed to burn the update from the Kenwood website to a disc and insert it, it should work as simple as that. You shouldn't have to mix it with music or video...

Yeah, I just got a blank CD, burned the file straight to it and inserted the disc, the head unit took care of the rest.

Try to download it to your desktop then to a cd.
