    Sounds like a lean misfire, check for a major vacuum leak using some carb cleaner, spray it where you suspect the leak, if the idle gets higher, you found it.

    Better meaning a LOT more money? Yes, but open wallet, close mouth.

    You would need something just short of a standalone and gonna be an easy $1000+ in the end. The URD Map-ECU or something similar.

    if i got some smoke in the engine compartment while the engine is running it should get sucked into the vacuum line telling me where the leak is right?

    Ouch......Are the MAF calibrators Im looking at worth it in your opinion? Just from what I've read people seem to like them with the CAI

    Anybody know if CARB will mess with you for having a snorkel come time to smog? I dont see why, it's pre-filter and just moves intake location but....it's California.

    They claim up to 15 hp on a 4.0 so I guess thats relative. If you think up to 15 hp is worth the end cost of part, plus install (unless you do it) and tuning, and a wideband 02 sensor in order to tune accurately in the first place. So factor that in as well..

    If it has a CARB sticker plate it will be fine, even if it doesnt it should not be a problem unless your smog guy is a stickler for details, and some are so...but Cali is been hammering smog guys lately so they might question it just to err on the side of caution..

    didn't hear a vacuum leak so we took it for a drive, below certain RPM's you have to pump the gas to keep from bogging,once you hit about the middle of the gear you can stomp on the gas and off you go.
    when we pulled out of the driveway the idle very high, it has a very inconsistent idle speed

    grandpa thinks it's some sensor or something in the electronics.
    do you think it might be a fuel regulator or TPS, or what?
    i don't think it's a vacuum leak as we found the lines and checked them and the RPM never rose.

    Important to note that the URD is for OPEN Loop only (WOT) and will only modify signals when mashing the throttle.
    Not really worth it IMO, which is why I sold my URD Calibrator before ever installing it.

    Unfortunately our ECUs are not easily tunable like others are due to the closed encryption from Toyota.
    If you want significant and safe power upgrades you are basically stuck with headers & exhaust or forced induction.

    Oh ok, I thought it worked both closed and open loop. Good to know. Maybe Ill look into a good set of headers :thumbsup:

    Tyler, smog should not give you an issue as a snorkel is before the filter, as long as the filter, carbon trap and MAF are in the stock or approved configuration your fine, its like a CAT back system.( filter forward)

    If you have a CEL check that first to see if you do indeed have a sensor problem.

    Though those were out of production?

    THats true, however there are a lot of smog techs that dont know their ass from a hole in the ground and might get confused or not even want to smog it if there is no CARB sticker.

    It wont affect emissions, but California is a PITA when it comes to that stuff. The state has been sending a lot of vehicles to smog shops trying to trap them into doing something questionable and hammering them with fines lately, so a lot of guys if they even think its a problem they get scared and wont smog it....even though its legit.
