    Question -

I'm wanting to buy square steel tubing that will sleeve into another piece of square steel tubing. I could obviously match up ID of one piece to OD of another, but a really tight fit is really important (that's what she said!)

Do you guys know of anywhere online that I could buy paired pieces of tubing that are meant to be sleeved?

This will be for my bed cage / roof top tent rack.

1.75 will slide into 2" .120 wall i dont think you could paint it and still fit it but its a pretty good fit. You just need to make sure you get HRPO for both and steel from a good mill that don't have a fat weld on the inside.

It has more stuff done to it now.
So I finally pulled the trigger and saved up enough money to get a custom tube hybrid bumper made. I went to a local off-road fabricating shop with an idea of the bumper; here is what I took them:

    SDHQ4_zps6e6c51b0_bba5f4d75fcd2b53837f6ea3b520b79ef6bc2965.jpg
    SDHQ1_zps5e66375c_d992556aec8d36ed6ef41c39032fbda2b8532891.jpg

    KRFab3_zpsa221e77c_90f704a58ff0d92c83df00e52c98eff886d73b48.jpg

I asked for aluminum plating about as thick as the SDHQ bumpers. I also said that I wanted the tubing powder coated but since it would most likely be welded onto the frame, they would tack weld it on and once it was completed remove it so I could take it to B.A.M.F. to get powder coated and then have them weld it back on. Since one of the pictures didn't have the skid going all the way under into a belly skid I think they were quoting me without it. They quoted me $1600 for the whole thing done in 2 days. Does that sound decent? How much would the materials cost for something like that?

Your not taking into account the fabricators time nor consumables etc etc. your going to a shop and getting a shop price. Garage rabbets have less overhead so it tends to be a bit cheaper. In most cases, shops pay their fabricators due to their talent. Most garage rabbets don't have that. However, now adays there is some crazy good garage fab work coming out so if your looking to save coin I would suggest that route.

Paden's bumper is 4130 and 1/4" Alum. I'm not sure on 4130 but I know last time I looked into a sheet of 1/4 alum it was around 400 for a sheet if I remember correctly. Granted you don't need the whole thing for a bumper.

This. Building custom bumpers is extremely time consuming. It took me about 60+ hours to build my tube bumpers. And most shops charge about $100/hr or more

That's pretty cool, might be a good investment for a large shop.

Would it be possible to build a bed rack for a full size bed that has a toolbox? One that is stable enough to not move around and able to hold a spare tire on the top of it? Or does the toolbox get in the way?

    Hey guys,

Anyone know of an online steel retailer that sells tubing designed to be sleeved together? I want to build a bed rack that will slide into the bed cage and I need tubes that are matched.

I don't want to order 2'' OD .120 DOM wall tubing and try to sleeve 1.75'' OD tubing into it only to find out it won't fit or has too much slop.

I've had good luck sleeving 1.5 into 1.75 and 1.75 into 2" .120 wall tubes. Usually no slop so to speak of. You may be well off looking into using some tube clamps though, or just using some poly bushed sleeves and a pin to create joints.

    2" x .120 will sleeve 1.75 no problem. 1.75 x .120 sleeves 1.50 no prob. 1.50 x .120 sleeves 1.25 etc etc etc.

I need you help guys. Im trying to bend a piece of aluminum angle iron. I want to bend it backwards if you will. I tried putting it in a vise and heating it up with a torch, but a side of the angle iron snapped. Any ideas?
