Plumber help, is this copper pipe? That dark spot is a rotted hole in a drain pipe. Leak above my kitchen ceiling. Pic 1

Finally got a new pair and not missing one of them anymore!

I'm assuming copper because of the green around the leak, just never seen copper rotted like that.

 

You might have to cut out and place a fernco coupling there temporarilyto stop the leak, that or solder a coupling. Depends on how bad the rest of the pipe is. What stinks is how close the break is to the wall.

 

Looks like Copper to me. What's it hooked to on the lower right? is it a drain pipe or pressure?

 

It almost looks like the joined copper to something else. Looks like the copper fitting is still sound, and it fails right after. But copper isn't generally used for drain pipe, just for supply under pressure. Are you sure that is drain? Hit up Kolunatic for help.

 

Oh yeah, that looks like some sort of rubber no-hub, which would be drain/gravity, ASSUMING SOME INCOMPETENT IDIOT DIDN'T PUT THIS TOGETHER. I just love previous owner DIY work...

 

1 1/2" copper was sometimes used for small bathroom and kitchen drains before copper got priced out of this world. If it's a drain it most likely rotted from the inside out.

 

That's a floor joise,or how ever you spell it. I have a little room behind that y and after the hoist. I think I can cut all that out and replace with plastic. Just feel more comfortable cutting into a copper pipe rather than say a cast iron drain.

The more I looks like you're going to have to replace that section going through the wall. I have a rental house that was built in the late 70s with cooper drains that is doing the same thing. I am going to cut most of it out and replace it with PVC.

 

Yeah I just never seen copper rotted like that. That's what's throwing me off.

 

I would cut as much as the copper out as possible an leave the cast iron alone and connect the PVC to the cast with a furnco.

 

Ah, didn't know that. I thought only cast iron and ABS. Yeah, Hydrogen sulfide FTW.
