The fuck does that mean? It's compatible but doesn't have the additive in it? What? Is there a 75w-90 GL5 oil that isn't compatible (excluding additives)? Theres not a LS spec'd oil if you're not including the friction modifiers. It's the same gl5 every other diff uses but with friction modifiers.

Not only are you wrong but that doesn't even make any god damn sense.

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.

My truck is just about to hit 30k. Did front, rear and xfer case this morning. Thanks for the great write up. I think i found a new cologne, that stuff smells awesome. And just for good measure, How do i know if i need to add LSD additive? I kid. Just figured I'd throw that question in this thread for the 500th time.

Is that qt that says limited slip friction modifier included something new? All i've ever seen is the qts that say LS and like Janster mentioned it just meant it's compatable... you could use it for both LS and non LS rear ends... additional friction modifier is required when applicable.

Janster is correct. Most gear oils say "LS", and the "LS" simply means they are compatible for use in an LS diff, but they dont have the addative in them. Unless the bottle actually states the addative is in it.

Interesting...this might be something totally NEW. I've been using Mobile 1 for 15 years and never seen anything like that before.

But in all seriousness.... Look at the back of the bottle. Compare the labels.

If the label on the 'Additive included' is the exact same label (on the back) as the LS (or non LS) bottle.... then, they're the same product.

If it doesn't specifically mention something about a friction modifier (on the back of the bottle) - then it doesn't have it. I actually emailed Mobile 1 many many years ago questioning them about the labeling of LS versus non LS labeled bottles. As I suspected - it is the same product (LS and non labeled bottles).

That doesn't make any sense. If it's compatible for LS diffs and says LS it's going to have friction modifier in it. If it's GL5 then it's compatible with the diffs (LS and otherwise with the exception of friction modifier) and theres no sense in putting LS on the bottle unless it has friction modifier in it. Theres no special specd oil for LS' aside from friction modifiers. The LS diffs are specd for GL5 oil with a friction modifier, the open diffs are specd for GL5, theres no difference aside from friction modifier.

I don't know how they did it in the days of old but Mobil 1 and Valvoline products contain friction modifiers already, you can find the info on their websites.

It does, which makes her incorrect.

Which is about par for the course for her which is why I'm being such a dick about it. Misinformation.

Maybe you should email them again because it's on their website.

Oh and get back to me when maybe you've set up a diff or done something other than routine oil changes with your husband.

It could be that they did things differently before but that doesn't make much sense to me. I can tell you that a search on BITOG turns up several older threads saying the same thing, LS ready. So they've been doing it for quite a while if they ever made a change.

    Wow...... Believe what you want.
I changed my diff oil at 26,000 miles in June 2010. Yes...I do it. Not my husband. I used Mobile 1 LS 75w-90. After 1 bottle of friction modifier (XL3), my diff still rumbled. I had to add another bottle.
If Mobile 1 LS had the friction modifier in it, then why did I need to add anything, let alone a 2nd bottle?

Thanks.... But I've been working on machinery for 18 years. I can't setup a diff but I'd like to see you work on some of the equipment I work on as a career.

I'll quote it again for you.

I'm not sure why you required two bottles of extra friction modifier, Ford I believe, however from what I've seen that's not typical.

I was negative repped for this post... "You Know Nothing" was the comment.

I was simply going by this post. If I am WRONG, I would rather be told so publically so I do not cause any issues with my truck and can add the appropriate additives.

If you haven't already read the other 67 pages of this thread, you'll notice that most people don't recommend Mobile 1 because people have used 1 bottle of friction modifier and the diff continues to rumble and it effectively hasn't been successful.

I'm a loyal Mobile 1 user and I decided to add a second bottle. Funny you mention Ford...XL3 is FORD friction modifier and its what my local dealership uses. No more rumbles.

Typical or not....It doesn't matter what YOU think MY truck needs. It doesn't matter what you think everyone elses truck needs either. If it works, it works. You can't argue against personal experience.

Yeah, and I got negative Rep too (same comment) - Big whoopie...

Youre really dense aren't you? I read YOUR posts about ford... Mobil says extra may be required but it still has it in there. If you have chatter BFD add an extra tube.

I got the same rep lol someones butthurt.
