I don't sand between coats. I get the mud as smooth as possible on the first 2 coats, then thin the 3rd coat mud more than normal to spread easily and fill any little pits. Then I use a thicker primer and the walls come out fantastic.

 

It doesn't look like you used any cutting fluid? It doesn't matter what drill bits you use if you don't lubricate them...

I can see that working for textured walls but not so much for a flat wall. Wouldn't you need to sand for that?

 

i think we have those in one of our engineering lab rooms here at school and the same thing happened, i looked on a table and one of them was snapped in half

it also helps to hold the bit straight, not sure how you could break such a large bit while holding it straight in the hole.

 

Nah. I sand after the 3rd coat if I find issues, but on the 3rd coat I skim out from the tape quite a bit so you can't see the lines when it's all primered and painted. I call it the level 4.5 finish. I don't skim the whole wall, but I skim enough that the primer makes it smooth. Use a high quality primer. It might be the most important step.

That picture was my first coat, so it's not skimmed out yet.

 

And this. I use skil drill bits from walmart on steel and I have yet to break one over 3/8". The small ones break easily, but the big ones do fine until they need sharpened. I don't have a sharpener...

 

you can sharpen them on a bench grinder FYI. It takes quite a bit of practice to get right though.
