Its more noticeable in person, crappy iPhone vid, but the needle is jumping constantly. Only by few rpms, but thats just at idle. When driving, it'll jump up to 2nd gear for a second, then back down, then back to 2nd.
This is with a constant foot.

I think you are confused. Normal for the rpms to jump alittle at idle. And when driving you will only be in 1st for a very short period. Rpms go up as the motor works then drops at shift points then goes back up.

Outstanding thread!! Just finish'd my 06 w/179,000 miles - almost as dark as used engine oil - Not sure fluid has ever been change :(, just bought her 6 months ago. Wasn't as bad as I thought it - follow'd your procedure and it work'd great.

damn.. I thought there was only like 3-4 quarts in the tranny... hahaha...

So basically if you just drain and refill the pan, it doesn't do shit... it just mixes your new fluid in with the dirty fluid.

Are there any other fluids I could get at an Advanced, Auto Zone, or similar? I didn't see the Amsoil or Redline there.

lots of people on here & BITOG have had good experiences with Valoline Max Life. It's recommended for Toyota WS applications & is way cheaper than toyota's. I have 4 gallons sitting in my garage ready for a full flush. Walmart has the best price i could find. Auto Zone carriers it as well.

I did this last night...started out with 14qts.

Drained 3, put 3, did this 4 times for 12 qts, then only did 2 for the last bit.

Got to the end, got ATF up to temp, let truck idle and crawled under while idling. Pulled check plug...hardly any drip come out...WTF...I put back what I took out..Ok now head to autozone for another quart....got 2 quarts to be safe..

Came home put half a quart....let it temp, idle, and go check...WTF!!!! nothing hardly coming out.

Put the rest in.....same thing......WTF....still nothing.....WHere is all my fluid going?

If I turn the truck off with the plug out, it will come flowing out of the plug. So i quickly put the plug in.

So i dumped the other half and quart in and figured if its over full when I check it will drain out the plug.

Went through the process again...let it get to solid light AT Temp...let idle and go pull plug while idle....WTFFFFFF!!!! hardly anything coming out while idling.

Yes I am pulling the right plug...its the one in the middle area of the pan on the passenger side with a hex in the middle. Where is all my damn fluid going? I know it has to be full because more is obviously in there now than what came out. So at 16qts, how is this possible?

I drove it to work anyway this morning cause I dont have a choice, but I am confused on this. Anyone??

When you turn the truck off , the trans pump doesnt pump allowing fluid to drain back into the pan and is why you get oil running out of the fill hole with the truck turned off . Continue filling until it comes out the fill hole while warm and running in park as explained in the service manual . Sounds like your trans was very low from the start - a common problem with these trucks from the factory .
I cant beleive Toyota . There should be a filler tube with a level indicator on these transmissions . A sealed unit ? what a joke . What happens when these transmissions leak . Its easy for a leaky trans to go un-noticed for a while and having to check fluid level by going under the truck is simply Toyotas way of hoping owners wont check the fluid .

The fill hole? HAHA...that is pretty dang full if it comes back out the fill hole.

You mean the check plug on the pan?

It could be underfill from the factory...but how is that now possible after I have been through 16qts?

I drained the 3 from the pan in the beginning. Replaced it with 3.

Drained 3 more and replaced with 3. Thats 6

Drained 3 more and Replaced with 3. Thats 9

Drained 3 more and replace with 3. Thats 12

Drained around 2 and replaced 2 with Thats 14.

Then added 2 quarts to get some to come out of the check plug hole..and nothing ever really came out with it idling.

Im super stumped. Unless it was super low in the beginning.
