Grinding while shifting into 5-6 Gear

Hey,
So I started noticing that my truck doesn't like to make it into fifth gear and sixth gear on the highway. It almost feels that the clutch isn't engaging all the way down. It gets through first - fourth gear perfectly fine but when it hit 5th and 6th gear it grinds pretty badly and eventually goes into gear.
Any help is appreciated!

synchros are worn most likely. You might want to try changing the fluid for some MT90 or Amsoil.

 

oh and forgot to mention that i recently (under 3K ago) changed the tranny fluid to MT 90.

Synchros? hoping thats not an expensive fix

 

requires full disassembly of the transmission. Might be cheaper to find a junkyard replacement if you can't do the work your self.

Yeah just looked up synchros and sounds like exactly the problems i'm having

 

Honestly, if you don't have the money, you could simply learn to live with it. If you rev match properly you won't have any grinding but it is a pain.

 

Fix it properly or replace with a good unit before you grind the teeth off of one of those gears and they go through the entire transmission. Cars are not something to cut corners with. It is the second biggest purchase people make in their lives. Budget to keep up with any maintenance and emergency repairs.

I'll see if I know any friends good with transmissions, looks like the synchros are a cheap part, labor just sucks

 

Yea the parts are not bad at all. Its all in the labor. To help save some money you could pull the transmission out with a friend and take the unit to a trans shop to save on the remove/install time.

 

Seems the tranny comes out easy too.

Yea it usually takes about 2 hrs maybe to get one out if you haven't done it a lot. Exhaust, driveshaft, connectors, undo the clutch throw assembly, shifter may have to come off of that one, bell housing bolts, starter. I work on mustangs. I am just going off the general scheme of things.

 

can someone help me order the right part # for 5-6 Gear synchros(not sure if they vary).

yeah changed it recently. Synchros are getting replaced, just need to find the part #'s

 

Your best bet would be to talk to Toyota. They will ask for your vin # so as to make sure to get exactly what you need. Different year trucks may have slightly different parts depending on whether they changed anything.

 

I just wanted to say, make sure you check all the easy things first before removing the tranny and having it rebuilt. Linkages and fluid in the reservoir and such. Also, if you do have the tranny rebuilt, you may want to expect to replace a few other components in there since you have it apart. Have all the pieces inspected. No point in rebuilding part of it only to have something go wrong in a few thousand miles.

 

Makes me wonder: would double clutching when shifting be a temporary fix?
I know some truck(18 wheelers) don't have synchros and they have to double clutch to shift correctly.
